Topic: Transfer old MSDE database to new SQL Server 2005 Express database

I need to upgrade an older copy of R6 using MSDE to the latest version. I also need to transfer it to a new Windows 7 machine. What is the best strategy for doing this? Ideally I'd like the new machine to be running SQL Server Express, but can forgo this if it's not feasible or if the benefit is negligible. Could I do this:

1. Upgrade the old machine to the latest version of R6

2. Install the latest version on the new machine

3. Copy the database on the old machine across and attach to the new machine

Cheers,
Charles

Exactly that.  Version 6.17 is the latest installation version. As you have a site id this can be downloaded www.Recorder6.info/Standalone.zip

Upgrade old machine to this. Install 6.17 on new machine. Detach and attach and copy the database across and attach it on new machine. See www.Recorder6.info for best versions of SQL server.

Thanks Mike, much appreciated.

The person I am doing the upgrade for has lost their paperwork including installation codes. I have a SiteID so is it possible from that to look-up or generate a new code? I know the person has a legitimate copy because it's my Dad!

Cheers,
Charles

It doesn't matter which site id you use for the installation if you are going to overwrite the databse as the site id is held there. Using LC000437 and code 18C0  will be safe, but make sure this isn't used for any live system.
