Topic: Boundary on map

I would like to display a polygon of the boundary of our survey area on the maps on recording forms (as on NatureSpot). I can see on the BRC Warehouse that there is an option in Lookup Lists > Locations for uploading a shapefile. Is this the correct place to upload the file to and how do I then get this to display on my website? I assume that I can't stop people from submitting records from outside this area, just encourage them not to?
Many thanks
Rachel

Re: Boundary on map

Hi Rachel
Yes, you would zip the SHP file (as there are several files) then upload it into the warehouse, creating a location with the required boundary. Or potentially you can just add a location and draw the boundary if the boundary is not too detailed.

Then there are a few ways we might try to add that boundary to your recording form. In NatureSpot, we have actually created a GeoServer layer exposing the location boundary, then we put the layer's feature type name into the configuration option Other Map Settings > WMS Layers from GeoServer. You might need Jim or I to set the layer up for you though.

We don't have a built in validation at the moment to prevent record submission from outside a known polygon, so you are right it would just be a case of discouraging this. Plus you can always exclude the bad records in reports. It would be a nice addition though!

Best wishes

Re: Boundary on map

Hi John
Many thanks for this. I will try to create the shapefile and get it onto the warehouse and then get back to you about setting it up on the website.
All the best
Rachel
