Re: Introduction
Hi all,
This is my first posting to the NBN Forum, therefore firstly I'll introduce myself for those who don't know me. My name is Les Hill and I work for Butterfly Conservation at Lulworth, Dorset as Data Manager of Moths Count, specifically the National Moth Recording Scheme. Previously, I worked for Abbey National at Milton Keynes in one form or another for 16 years, supporting their MS-Windows PC desktop and LAN/WAN infrastructure, the last 7 years specifically for disaster recovery purposes. I'm also a keen moth recorder and until I moved to Dorset I was the honorary vice-county macro-moth recorder for Bedfordshire. I have some experience with Recorder since R2000.
For the new scheme I've chosen networked Recorder 6; however, I'm waiting for the imminent release of v6.10 which supports an installation directly onto SQL Server 2005. The database it is estimated will contain ~18 million macro-moth records with an annual increment of ~1 million records (probably an over-estimate!) The dataset will in due course be uploaded in stages to the NBN Gateway. The scheme also intends to use GIS extensively.
Are there any members of the forum who have similar-sized datasets? I would be pleased to hear of your experiences.
Best wishes,
Les.
