Topic: Changing R6 over to a new PC

I spoke to Sally a few weeks ago about how best to do this and she suggested starting a thread here.
Here's my status: I've Recorder 6 V6.10.4.120 on an XP machine running on the Developer Edition SQL Server. I want to move it entirely to a Windows 7 machine, preferably again using the appropriate SQL Server provided I can find the right one at the right price (I've seen it at http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalo … CGEQ8wIwAg which seems to be at a price roughly similar to what I paid for my older Developer Edition)
I liked having SQL Server, with only a little effort in learning how to use it it was helpful in finding out what was going on in Recorder and with a bit of luck a new one would work alongside the newer Access 2010 databases for non-Recorder purposes.
A visit to the Recorder website (http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-4612) entitled "Download latest version) gives me all the upgrades but doesn't list a standalone install which I expected to find, not to worry as Mike's posting at http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-4612 gave me a link to a standalone and a bit of advise on how to get started.
Sally wanted to follow this step-by-step in order to monitor progress and help her upgrade her instruction manual so I have to put off the first step now (which seems to be upgrading Recorder 6 on my old machine) until I get the go-ahead. I hope this thread is going to be useful to others.

Re: Changing R6 over to a new PC

I did a new standalone installation guide for v6.17 – see my forum post, http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=15857#p15857 , for more information. It was written just before Mike made the download available so it needs updating for that but as far as I am aware most new users are managing to install Recorder 6 with the guidance in that. Note that v6.17 contains modifications that enable it to be installed cleanly on PCs running Windows 7.

I don’t think there will be many standalone users who will want the developer edition of SQL Server especially as, unlike MSDE, the SQL Server tools (Management Studio Express) are available with SQL Server 2005/8 Express. Express will suffice for most people.

If you are moving to a new PC you need to install Recorder 6 on the new PC then replace the database with the one from the old PC, more or less as specified in http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=15506#p15506 . The version of the database (see the Setting table) will need to be brought into line with the version of the software by either running the appropriate updates on the old PC or by running them on the new PC after loading the database from the old one. You also need to copy over any user added files like rucksacks and recording cards.
