Topic: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Upgrade 6.18.1  is now available as a ReleaseCandidate at www.Recorder6.Info/UpgradeKitfrom6.14to618Build259RC.zip . Also available is the associated Dictionary Upgrade www.Recorder6.info/00000015,16,17,18,19,1A.zip .  Details on installing the upgrades togther with the release notes are available at  www.Recorder6.info/R6v618ReleaseNotesRC.doc  . Please download and read the release notes before installing the upgrades.

The Release Candidate  is a version of the Recorder 6 upgrade (Version 6.18 build 259) which has been tested and which we believe to be in its final form, but which we would like to have installed on a few systems before making it more generally available.  If you install the release candidate then you may need to run the final upgrade version when it becomes available on the JNCC web site.

The Dictionary update populates the new Organism table and will take a long time to run (typically 2 hours, but possibly much more).   See the release notes for more information.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Mike,

I ran the dictionary upgrade when you made it available a couple of weeks ago. However the release notes document above says the dictionary upgrade should only be run on 6.18. Just checking which version of the ddictionary is installed in the About window it now says Dictionary version: WWWWWWWW. What should I do now?

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

That is of concern. The last upgrade should have taken you to 00000014 not WWWWWWWW. We need to try an establish where your Dictionary is updated to and run the upgrades from there.  Do you know if it went to WWWWWWWW with the last upgrade or was it set to this before ? If not I will try to find some key changes in the Dictionary upgrades which identify where you are.  One immediate thought is the change to the List of Additional items. If you open this list in the Taxon Dictionary browser is it split into Kingdoms  or just one long List ?

Upgrades from 00000015 up will only work on version 6.18 or above.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Problem solved by the ancient mystic trick of shutting it down and starting up again. Now says 00000014. Probably caused by an ignored error. I did get a bit confused about which one needed to be done on 6.18. Running an upgrade sounds like a nice simple job for the last working day before chistmas.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Thank goodness for that.  I will take a look at the notes and try to make it a bit clearer about the dictionary upgrades.  Dictionary upgrades from 00000015 up will populate/change entries in the Organism table, so if it isn't there the Upgrades will fail. 00000015 to 0000001A do nothing other than populate the Organsim table. Future upgrades will only amend it so will not take so long to run.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Is it possible to run the dictionary update without having done the RC update, please?

8

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

You must be up to 6.18 to run any Dictionary Upgrade after 00000014 , and any future Dictionary upgrades. Dictionary upgrades 15 to 1A only populate the new table and do nothing else to the Dictionary so are of no value without the upgrade to 6.18.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Mike

I upgraded to 6.18.1 and then ran the dictionary upgrades to 1A.  I checked the Help > About R6 info and it showed the latest versions of both in place.  I shut down and restarted R6 but immediately got an unhandled error message, and could go no further.

To cut the story short, I eventually uninstalled R6 and reinstalled from CD and then upgraded to 6.17.1.  I then wondered whether I could avoid doing all the dictionary upgrades from Q by restoring my NBNdata.bak file which was up to Dictionary 14, and so I gave it a try, and checked the "About R6" and yes, it appeared to have worked.

This bak file, for reasons I needn't explain, was empty of records, and my next move was to do an R3 to R6 bulk move of my dataset.  For this I needed to install the add-in Recorder_3_Import_v6.  However, when I browsed to this file in the Add-in module window and clicked on open, I received the message "The specified file is not a COM server and cannot be registered".  i clicked OK and was then informed that the target .ocx file had been successfully installed (!?)  But clearly it hadn't. It is not listed in files of type when I attempted to browse to the .esp file that holds my Bulk Move import data.  Do you have any idea what has gone wrong with installing this add-in module, and how to overcome it?

The other problem with the RC 6.18.1 upgrade is the least of my worries at present.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Trying moving the OCX file into the Addin folder of R6 unless you have already done this. If you can also let me know which Microsoft operating sytem you are on and which version of  SQL server you are running this will help advise what you would be the best approach, if you have further difficulties. Agree the upgrade to 6.18 can wait.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Thanks for looking into this problem.

Copy/pasting the .ocx file into the R6 Addins folder had no effect.  It didn't show up in either the Add-in module window, nor as the 'R3 import' option in the save as type box.
I'm running XP sp3, and using Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Having copied the file into the R6 addin  folder, run the install addin process again, but finding the file in the addins folder.  You should be Ok with everything with XP sp3 and SQL Server 2005.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Many thanks, Mike.  I have successfully imported the R3 dataset.  I hadn't realised that I would need to run the install process again after having copied the .ocx file into the Addins folder.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

If you remember what the message on 6,18 was please let me know. We would like to solve any problems before making it generally available.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Mike, having successfully done a Bulk Move export of data from Recorder v3 to Recorder 6.17.1, I upgraded to 6.18.1.259 (and also upgraded the dictionary to 1A), and attempted another import of data from R3.  As soon as I clicked on the ESP file in order to start the import, I received an unhandled error message, copied below:

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Did Recorder actually open ? If so had you done the Index rebuilds after the Dictionary upgrade ?

yes, and yes.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Thanks.  It turns out that the change we have made to allow the large Excel  files to be imported has stopped the addin from working. This will be fixed in the full release of 6.18. Are you in urgent need of this ?

No, and thanks.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Mike, a resolution of this problem has now become rather urgent owing to a third party's changed requirement. Is there any chance that you could help me with this sometime during the coming week?

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Hopefully I will have the next version within the next few days. If not we should be able to help somehow.  Chase me up Monday if you have heard nothing.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

The new version isn't available yet.  In order to do the import you should be able to use the 6.17 executable. To do this find Recorder.exe and give it a temporary new name. Then copy in the 6.17 executable (zip of this attached).  This should allow you to run the addin to do the transfer. Once the transfer is done delete Recorder.exe (6.17 version)  and rename your 6.18 version back to  the  Recorder.exe . Recorder will open with the 6.17 executable and the 6.18 database, but it shouldn't be used in this state except for the purposes of the transfer as there will be places where it generates errors.

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

Thanks, Mike.  After having done that, what should I do when the new 6.18.1 is released......run the upgrade in the usual way?

Re: Recorder 6 Upgrade v 6.18.1

It will be necessary for everyone who had loaded the release candidate version of 6.18 to run the final upgrade when it becomes available.
