Topic: BRC Warehouse

Hi all,
It's a fair while since I had my Indicia training (over a year I think), so go gently with me! This will probably be my first question of many....I'd like to set up a recording site for the University of York, hosted on our existing University website. Would it be possible to use the BRC's Warehouse?
Thanks,

Sarah

Re: BRC Warehouse

Hi Sarah,

If you could elaborate on what you are planning to do a little bit more, by email if you prefer, I can let you know. Because it consumes a certain amount of resources, we need to know that you are contributing to recording of species in the UK for it to be in line with the work for which we are funded.

Re: BRC Warehouse

Hi Jim,
Thanks for getting back to me. It would be to record the wildlife that we see on our two campuses here at the University of York. The aim would be to get the records onto the Gateway for others to see. At the moment we have a few people recording species on campus, but their records stay in drawers and don't get shared at all. Students doing field work projects on campus would be encouraged to submit records once they have had them checked by a supervisor or other member of staff. Staff organise bat and other surveys throughout the year so they would also be encouraged to submit records.
Let me know if you need more info,
Sarah

Re: BRC Warehouse

Hi Sarah,

That sounds fine and I particularly approve of exposing students to the recording process. Rather than develop your own website, however, you might find that our website, iRecord, built with Indicia since you did your training, provides everything you need for this purpose.

Re: BRC Warehouse

Thank you Jim. I know iRecord and have put records on a couple of times. What I thought would be nice about using Instant Indicia would be that we'd have our own site that University staff and students could easily see all the records for campus on a map, but I'll have a chat to colleagues and see which they think would be best.

Re: BRC Warehouse

Hi Sarah,

With iRecord you can see records on a map too. However, it might include records from other people passing through the campus. If you can meet your requirements with iRecord it would save you a lot of work.

Re: BRC Warehouse

hi Sarah,
A random thought spurred by attending the BES conference last week, but have you considered asking BES for a small project grant to support the setup of a recording form for university students (on campus and when on field trips).  I'd be happy to help put something together.
cheers, david

Re: BRC Warehouse

Hello Jim
I have recently started working for OPAL in York and I am now taking the lead on developing a recording website for the University. We would like to press ahead with using Instant Indicia to set up a recording site on the University's existing website.
If you are still happy for us to use the BRC's warehouse, please could you let me know what I need to do to access this?
Many thanks and best wishes
Rachel

Re: BRC Warehouse

The answer to Rachel's question was that she needed to email me her contact details and that was about it. She pre-empted me by doing so already. Jim.
