Topic: Recorder upgrade from XP to Windows 7, 64bit?

Hi,

Bit of advice please. I’m trying to assist one of our contributors to upgrade Recorder to a new PC. The old was XP with Recorder 6.14. The new machine is Windows 7, 64 bit (of which I have no experience) and I’m not sure the best path to go down.

Cheers in anticipation,

Dave

You will need to bring upgrade the copy of Recorder to 6.17. Probably best done on the original machine if possible. Then take a backup.

Install R6 Version 6.17 on the new machine. You will need to install SQL Server 2008 first (see www.Recorder6.info). Choose a version of SQL server 2008 which includes the Management Tools.   As you already have a site id and security key version 6.17 can be downloaded  from www.Recorder6.info/Standalone.zip.

Make sure R6 is working Ok. You can key in data as a test if you wish.

Then restore from the backup. You may be able to use the R6 Restore, but if not use the restore in the Management tools. If you need help with this please ask.

You will also need to copy over the users files(Rucksacks etc).  If there is Mapdata involved then depending on what it is some other copying and processing may be required.

Re: Recorder upgrade from XP to Windows 7, 64bit?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the information. The Recorder upgrade side is fine, and the documentation and links made the SQL side seem straightforward. Unfortunately the computer doesn't agree. The installation falls over at step 7 (Setup Support Files). The only message was "an error has occurred". I did try a couple of other versions of SQL server express and at one stage had: Microsoft.VC80.CRT version="8.0.50727.4027",publicKey Token="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="x862,type="Win32". The last part made me think that possibly the PC wasnt 64bit so I tried 32bit versions and those failed as well. The first part of the message seems fairly common, mainly with people trying to load "I-tunes".

Totally at a loss, and as the PC is 40miles away it makes checking things and trying other approaches more tricky.

Any further advice please.

Cheers,

Dave

It is always a problem when Microsoft software will not install on Microsoft operating systems. I can't see anything specific (or at least nothing  simple on the web sites.) SQL Server 2005 might install and is worth a try.
