Topic: Species list import

I need to import a species list into my warehouse but I'm not sure whether to roll-up a list from the records I'm about to import, or import a more generalised list, such as the iRecord master list (which John said he could provide me with).

If I choose the former, when I import new records there might be new species, so would I first need to import the new species into the list?

Might it be worthwhile including a generalised master list snapshot in the repo?

Re: Species list import

Hi Charles
Both approaches will have their flaws- firstly because the master list I have was based on the "Nameserver for wider delivery" which was created originally for the Record Cleaner and which has not been updated. Secondly because as you suggest if you extract the list of names in use then when you import new records you may get new names which you would have to import first, otherwise there will be rejects. But, given that the master list could also end up having missing names due to being out of date and also because, being a reporting system, you only need the list of names in use, I prefer the approach of rolling up the names in use and uploading them. We should be able to set up Synch2Indicia to do this automatically in fact.

Until we sort out a flow of updates from the work the NHM are doing on the species dictionary, I don't think we'd want to include the master list in the repository. Also, my understanding is that if you are just exporting just the used names from Recorder you are not violating terms of use for the checklists, but it may be worthwhile checking that.
