Say you need to add the same 2 documents with totally different file paths to hundreds of your external refs boxes.

Adding a shortcut in each document folder pointing to the other document will save navigation time - you can click add in the external refs box, select your first shortcut, click add, (recorder moves to that folder) select the other shortcut- hey presto, the two documents have been added and no tedious searching.

Deleting the shortcut afterwards has no effect on the path in recorder, as it takes the actual document file path, not the path to the shortcut.
