Re: Missing backup tool

I have recently carried out a new installation of Recorder 6, from 6.6.8 upgraded to 6.7.2 then to 6.9.3. I've noticed that the backup tool appears to be missing. There is no Backup item under Tools > Database Tools, and if I go to "View or change backup location" I get an error "Can't find backup device nbndata_backup".

Any suggestions please?

Re: Missing backup tool

Hi Alan,

Seem to recall checking your admin rights on which ever server you've got R6 installed onto matters.

Once you've ensured that you have full read/write & create (esp) then you'll be able to view the backup location & run a backup.

I think that's what worked for us in the past, sorry no more help,

Rob.

Re: Missing backup tool

Thanks Rob

I forgot to mention I swapped the .mdf files to SQL Server 2005 Express. Maybe this has precipitatd the problem. I'll check admin righst as you suggest.

Re: Missing backup tool

Once we switched to SQL2005 Express we used the command line utility to run overnight backups. We used the Windows scheduler to fire a batch file that ran the command to perform a backup. It worked very well, although it did seem to tie up the CPU at 100% usage while the backup was running. Since switching to the full SQL2005, we're now using the built-in backup tools and scheduler.

Incidentally, have you tried using the backup database function within Management Studio? If you right-click on the NBNData database, there should be a backup option in there somewhere.

Re: Missing backup tool

Hi Charles

Thanks for this. I've just tried the backup function in Management Studio and that works. Sort of. For some reason, although I have 8 network drives connected on this machine, when I browse for backup location in Mgt Studio only 2 (plus the local C: drive) show up.  I can't see the drive I actually want to back up to.

A backup to the C:drive works. I guess I can manually copy this to my desired drive, but not ideal.

Re: Missing backup tool

Alan

That's because the SQL Server process is not running under your user account, its running under a special account that by default can only see your local disks and will have no network access. This is a security measure which prevents hackers damaging the rest of the network if they manage to run some SQL code.

Re: Missing backup tool

Hi John

Thanks for this. How can I access this account and change settings so that it can see one particular network drive?
