Re: Migrating an R6 installation from an old to a new computer

I am thinking ahead, in that the PC I am using is about to die.
So I will need to transfer the whole installation from this PC to a new one, and don't want to have to go through the lengthy installation process again, with all its problems.
There will be enough problems with everything else,  so don't want to add to it.

Is there an easy way to migrate the whole installation to a new PC?  Obviously it will have a new operating system (I use Windows XP now, and will no doubt be getting the latest Windows O/S)

I've checked through the "How to" stuff and can't find this question asked.
Any pointers?
Thanks
Nigel

Re: Migrating an R6 installation from an old to a new computer

You need to install Recorder 6 on your new PC then move your database and other user files across.  You may find it easier to install the latest version but if the database you move over isn’t at the same version you will need to run the necessary upgrades to bring everything up to that. I suspect that if you attempted to move the whole installation you would have difficulty getting the permissions etc. set up correctly.

The section on installation now on the Wiki contains most of the information you require – see the link from the Recorder 6 web-site http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/recorder (bottom left). From the Main page of the Wiki, select Recorder then Recorder 6, where the required information is under ‘Installation’ under ‘Application Administration Information’.

If you have any difficulties installing Recorder 6 please seek help via the forum, especially if you need a more up-to-date account of copying the database from one PC to another.

Re: Migrating an R6 installation from an old to a new computer

Thanks for the advice, Sally.
I was hoping that a migration might work, but clearly you think it probably won't work.
I have an additional difficulty, in only having a slow dial-up connection.
And in the summer season, as you can imagine, I don't fancy taking several days out, struggling with installations and upgrades when I've already done it once.... if you see what I mean!

I have heard of some software that will allow an installation set-up to be moved from one PC to another, but I need to get the details on that - it just might work in this case.

It may work if the operating system is the same, but unlikey if it isn't.  We will do our best to help if you keep us informed of your progress.

Thanks for that offer Mike.
This PC is definitely coming apart at the seams, so I may be off-line very soon.

Re: Migrating an R6 installation from an old to a new computer

Further to my previous comments.
I have got a new PC (with Windows 7 Professional, in the hope that it would allows for operating system incompatibilities), and used a Laplink product to transfer software with settings, etc.  With some programs it worked, so I didn't have to re-install, but with some it didn't.  This includes recorder, which failed with some sort of SQL error before I'd got to the password entry point.

So it looks as if I'll have to install it from scratch as suggested.

Sigh...

Re: Migrating an R6 installation from an old to a new computer

SQL Server 2000 which was supplied with R6 doesn't work with Windows 7 which will be where the problem is .   As a start go the www.Recorder6.info and download  from there SQL Server 2008 and install this.  (If it is too much for you to download contact me see below) There are some very detailed instructions which you can also download. Make sure you install the Management Studio tools which are in the download.  Take a  note of  of any passwords  etc (If you not too worried use 'Recorder6' as the SQL Server password ).. Once installed you should be able to open the instance of SQL Server in Management Studio.

You will need a new copy of Recorder to install.  As you have site id etc. you can download this, but it is  large so if you need it on DVD let me know by email (mike@Lfield.co.uk) with your adress and we will sort something out.

Re: Migrating an R6 installation from an old to a new computer

Thanks very much for that info Mike.
I am (unfortunately?) going on holiday for a few days, so won't be able to follow up till return.

I am afraid you're right about my difficulty in downloading stuff, so will need a DVD with whatever required, if that is acceptable.

I assume (!) that one installed, I can use my database back-up to restore all my records onto the new PC.

And I am assuming I can restart my old PC on return, it having power supply problems which are nearly terminal.
