Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

Hello,

My name is Brad, im writing from the Oxfordshire County Council Windows 7 Project team.

We currently have users running Recorder 6 on windows XP, but we are planning to upgrade their computers to Windows 7 in the near future.

Will this create any compatibility issues/is recorder v6 windows 7 compatible?
Is an upgrade required? (i'm told that we may need to upgrade to v6.17, if so, how would we do that?)
How would i get access to the installation media?
Will the upgrade cost anything?

Any help that can be provided will be appreciated, post here, or preferably, email me at:

many thanks,

Brad

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

You can install Recorder 6 under  Windows 7 and then transfer the database and files when you have it working. For your Windows 7 installation you will  need to decide which version of SQL Server to Install (SQL Server 2008 is recommended), but you can use SQL Server 2005 if you already have this. If you are using SQL Server 2000 (or MSDE) then you will need to replace this as it doesn't run under Windows 7 anyway.  You can use the Express version of SQL Server 2005 or 2008  (see www.Recorder6.info) or get an appropriate  full version from Microsoft.  Either way you will  need to get this installed and running before you install Recorder. Make sure you also install Management Studio Express as you will need this to attach the  database.  The  best thing to do would be to upgrade your  XP version to 6.17 before you do the transfer. If you do this immediately before transferring it to the Windows 7 system you will  avoid  having to resolve any issues with running 6.17 under XP. You will need to transfer the user files by copying them into the appropriate Windows 7 folders. The database can be transferred either by detaching it and attaching to the new SQl Server Instance using Management Studio, or you can use a backup restored via Management Studio.

If you users have made  use of the mapping features in Recorder this may be an issue. This can be a problem if polygon boundaries have been attached to Locations.

Version 6.17  will be available from your reseller shortly and will not cost more than a new copy (around £30.00 depending on reseller).

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

I'm just jumping onto this thread as it's our Recorder. This is already installed as a SQL Server database, not sure if it's 2005 or 2008. I assume this means that nothing will need to done to the database itself. Were being upgraded to Windows 7 from XP so I'm guessing we just need to upgrade the installed versions of Recorder. We don't use the mapping functions.

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

Is Recorder already on the SQL Server instance which will be running under Widows 7 ?  If so then the process would be

1, Upgrade the existing system to 6.17,
2, Detach the database and save the file. Also save other files like Rucksacks etc.
3. Install a new version of 6.17 under Windows 7 and make sure this is running (including on your work.stations)
3, Copy back the files to the new Windows 7 locations
4, Detach the installed (blank) version of NBNdata
5. Copy back in your original database and attach it.

You could wait until the last minute before upgrading your existing system to 6.17 . The purpose of the upgrade is just to bring the database structure into line and although Recorder should work  it  doesn't have to .

Hi Mike

Thanks for that. I'll check about the SQL Server.

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

I now have the definitive answer.

Recorder 6 is on an XP server with SQL Server 2005. There are no current plans to change this although at some point these might go to Windows 2008 server with SQL 2008.

Meanwhile our PCs are changing to Windows 7 from XP and Recorder 6, and other programs delivered across the network. So the question is what are consequences of this.

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

It is best to use 6.17 with Windows 7 so I think you would be best installing this.  There are a few different ways you could achieve what is required, but the way I would do it is as set out above.

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

What I'm confused about is that the network installation will remain as an XP installation, so there doesn't appear to any need to reinstall here, but the workstation side will be a Windows 7 installation.

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

In which case all you need to do is a workstation installation once Windows 7 is installed.. It will still be better if you are on version 6.17 to make sure the local files go in the right place.

Re: Recorder 6 on Windows 7

Hi Mike

I assume by the "the right place" you mean in the Recorder directory on the C drive?

As this is going to be delivered virtually I not sure where the Recorder Workstation files get put or what Windows or Recorder thinks the location is.
