Re: Recorder changing grid references

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but it is very annoying and potentially disastrous for data integrity!

If you change the site for a record, it SOMETIMES replaces the grid ref of the record with the default reference for the site - I have not managed to work out the pattern for when this occurs.

I am doing a batch at the moment and the Site NGR is "Site Centroid" and the record NGR is "Imported", but I've just tried a different one with the same settings and it didn't change the grid ref.

ANY clues to avoiding this would be most helpful!!!!

Re: Recorder changing grid references

It has been posted before but I can't find it at the moment.

Think it had something to do with if the record grid reference was the same as the old site centroid then it changed the record grid reference.

I make a habit of copying the grid reference before changing a site...

Re: Recorder changing grid references

I think the post is http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=1911

Is the view that my explanation in  this topic is correct.   Do we  want not to automatically change the Grid Ref  in any circumstances or should we continue to do so but only  if the the grid ref AND spatial ref qualifier  of the old Location and Sample/Eevent  are the same  ?

If we can decide on an approach this can be given a high priority.

Re: Recorder changing grid references

Automatically changing the site grid reference doesn't seem like the correct behavior. For example, if a record is assigned to a site and then given a specific grid reference, then changing the site would normally be for the reason the record has been assigned to the wrong site, rather that the grid reference was also wrong. Hence, I suggest the behavior should be to prompt the user with the following defaults.

Site A @ default GR -> Site B = prompt user suggesting option of default GR for Site B (alternative option is retain existing GR)
Site A @ specific GR -> Site B = prompt user suggesting option of retaining the specific GR (alternative option is GR for Site B).

In this way the user is control to what should happen (no nasty surprises), and the most likely behavior suggested to the user

I agree - this one of the rare times that an annoying prompt is actually useful.

Ok. We will go with a prompt as the specification.
