Re: More basic problems on new computer!

After reporting a few issues before, I deecided that now was a good time to change my computer, hence a shiny new one with Windows 7 (instead of XP on the old one) plus extra memory (4gig) and hard disk.

Having just experimented with it (and learned from my errors) before, I installed Recorder anew on the new machine. However :

I tried to make a backup of the database, as I could not do this on the previous machine. However, I have exactly the same problem, an error, with the LastError file containing

"exception message : Cannot open backup device 'NBNData_Backup(C:\Users\RICHAR~1\AppData\Local\Temp\NBNBackup.bak)'. Operating system error 5(error not found)."

which is basically the same message as I received before. Clearly this cannot be a problem with my computer as the new one is totally different in every way but gives the same error.

So, I decided I would run the upgrade from v 6.15.4 to 6.16.2. After running it, I then received an error box with this message :
"An error occurred while starting the application. EOle exception. Cannot open database "NBNData" requested by the login. The login failed."

I've uninstalled Recorder and reinstalled it. Works fine without the upgrade, which did work OK on my old computer!.

This is beginning to get a bit frustrating, reminds me of the bad old days of DOS ..........

There are known problems with Windows 7. Not so much with recorder, but with the security changes made by Microsoft, which stop their own software from running properly.

When resellers supply a new copy of Recorder they do make sure that users are aware if the issues and provide advice and guidance, but this is difficult to do when someone changes machine. Having said that we have done all we can through annoucements and forum posts to make users aware of the issues.

The upgrade to 6.16 is not that significant unless you wish to export very large amounts of data.  The good new is that the next upgrade to Recorder (v6.17) which is being worked on at the moment will work properly with Windows 7 and will upgrade from 6.15 .

Thanks for that. I hope that the backup issue is solved before I get too much data entered and really need to back it up!

It might be useful if, in cases like this, the "Upgrade Recorder 6 to the latest version" on the Recorder site said "unless you are running Windows 7."  which would save the hassle.

Anyway, having learned a lot from experimenting with the old machine my new version on the "clean" machine will be much better structured and organised than would have been the case had everything gone smoothly and my Mapmate data all imported successfully first try.

Re: More basic problems on new computer!

I think the upgrade will run, but you would  need to specifically run it as Administrator. However, I don't see much advantage in you doing this if you have working system. You can the backup working by installing SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express available free from the Microsoft Download site,.

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8531

These tools will allow you to backup your database and to reset the backup locations  so that the backup can run from within Recorder.

If you decide to use these then instructions on what to do can be provided.

Re: More basic problems on new computer!

Unfortunately, my statement that it "Works fine without the upgrade" now proves not to be true. After reinstalling Recorder, it ran Ok the first time. However, on starting it again this morning I received the same error message as after the upgrade. So I tried again, uninstalled it, installed again, ran OK the first time, closed Recorder, tried to run it again and there is the same error message.

Try running in Administrator. Right click on the Recorder icon. Choose run as administrator.  If this is OK let us know. Somewhere you do not have sufficient rights with a normal login to  access SQL server.

I am not absolutely sure where the probem is. In order to investigate further and to resolve the  problems you will need the Mangement Tools (see above).  If you decide to install these let us know so that further help can be provided..

There is information which may be of help in the post at http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=2207
