Re: Designations

Hi

I was wondering if there is any intention of expanding the list of designations? Searches (e.g. Taxon Reporting Category List) can use designations but these appear to be a bit limited (see http://www.searchnbn.net/library/webser … nTypes.csv).

For LBA species we can use existing lists (e.g. http://www.nesbiodiversity.org.uk/NE%20 … 20List.xls) or I could set up a database with TVK numbers. For other species and designations there is http://www.ukbap.org.uk/Library/SOCC6.XLS. Clearly I can write code to do searches based on these data sources (spreadsheets etc.) but my one concern is that there is no guarantee that the locations of these data sources will be maintained (i.e. not moved) and my (gut) feeling is that querying a database or using a web service is faster and more reliable.

Anyone have any thoughts (e.g. agreement with data providers re location of their data or even providing a web service) -I am aware that it is only worth developing something if there is sufficient demand.

Just some thoughts :)

Re: Designations

Hi Nick,

If you want to add a custom list you need to send us the list of preferred TVKs and the name you want to call the list. We will then add it to our DB and you can use it as a designation filter. For example, you could define your own North East Scotland LBAP list then use the web services to query which of those list species are recorded from site X. You would maintain ownership over the list, i.e responsibility for updates/tvk changes.

Re: Designations

Hi Richard

That sounds absolutely splendid. I will certainly do the North East Scotland LBAP list and will maintain it. Once we have that set up, I will also look at doing some others or get other agencies to do it.

To make it easy for you/us to maintain the list, do you want to define the format for the list of TVK numbers so that you can import them directly (e.g. comma separated list - NBNSYS0000005108, NBNSYS0000005108)?
