Re: Error importing data

I'm trying to import a set of records and keep getting the following error message, anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Exception occurred in application Recorder 6 at 16/01/2009 09-09-19.
Version : 6.13.2.176

Exception path:
EOleException : The text, ntext, and image data types cannot be compared or sorted, except when using IS NULL or LIKE operator

Re: Error importing data

Well I've found the offending data, but not the solution!

I had a field which contained some blank entries - I was trying to place this data in 'Sample Comment' - if I tell it to ignore the comment, I don't get an error

I guess this needs looking at!

Re: Error importing data

Craig
have you tried doing a find and replace in excel? You could replace the blanks within the "Sample Comment" column with the NULL operator asked for by Recorder.
Just an idea. It's not something I've done myself.

Re: Error importing data

This was supposed to be fixed in v6.13.3.182 - see Lynn's post 14/11/08 when she announced this upgrade: http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=3643#p3643 - but according to http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=3848#p3848 it hasn’t been fixed yet.

Re: Error importing data

When trying to import an Access 2003 database containing 51,705 records using the ADO Connection option in the Import Wizard in v6.13.3.182 (SQL Server Express, Dict Seq 0000000F) it would only import the first 5 records and the date of 03/10/2004 imported as 10/03/2004. The date in the other 4 records was 01/01/2004. This database was originally created in Access 2007 but when it wouldn’t import the customer converted it to Access 2003. The Data Type for the date field was Date/Time and the Format was ‘dd/mm/yyyy,@’. Having had problems with dates in other imports I deleted the Format and tried again but the result was the same. I then changed the Data Type to Text and tried again. This time 13,047 records were on display in the column selection page of the Wizard and the date that had been displayed as 10/03/2004 was displayed as 03/10/2004. Further investigation revealed that the problem is actually a single “ (double quote) in the comment field in row 13,048. When that is removed all 51,705 records loaded into the column selection page although I haven’t time at the moment to complete the import to check that there are no other problems.

Is “ a SQL Server reserved character that shouldn’t be used? Or does it need to be handled in a particular way? What other characters cause this type of problem?

Have other users successfully imported data from databases created using Access 2007? When I have imported data into an Access 2003 database the Format of each field has been left blank but in this database the Format for the date field was ‘dd/mm/yyyy,@’, for the Comment field it was ‘dd/mm/yyyy’ and for the other text fields it was ‘@’. What are the repercussions of this? The Comment field was right justified when its Format was ‘dd/mm/yyyy’. When the Format was removed it changed to being left justified.

Re: Error importing data

Hi Craig,
What method are you using to import the file from? Is it an Excel spreadsheet?

Recorder should handle the blanks without you having to mess around with the file maunually.  If you send the file across to me I should be able to look into it further and try and identify why the problem is occurring.

Thanks

Re: Error importing data

Hi,
I  had  the same error. It occurs when i either try to import a sample comment or a survey_event comment. For the taxon_occurrence comment the import works fine.

Here the erorr message i get:
Exception occurred in application Recorder 6 at 16/02/2009 14:41:25.
Version : 6.13.2.176

Exception path:
EOleException : The text, ntext, and image data types cannot be compared or sorted, except when using IS NULL or LIKE operator

Does anyone know if this bug will be fixed in the next version of Recorder?
Have a nice weekend.

Re: Error importing data

Hi,

There was a script written for this which was missed in the last release - I am awaiting confirmation from Dorset that it will be included in the next release (6.14 due around May). This script dealt with errors relating to the comment fields in the import wizard (taxon occurrence comment works fine). You could try upgrading to the latest version (6.13.3) as the script was supposed to have been inlcuded in the upgrade which was downloadable from the website (although I am not sure at this stage whether this is the case). Do let us know how you get on.

Thanks,
Lynn
