Re: Proposed changes to Recorder for reporting on species designations

The following link provides details of the proposed new functionality for reporting on species designations:
http://forums.nbn.org.uk/uploads.php?file=CCN%20307%20V5.doc

These proposed changes were compiled by JNCC in conjunction with detailed discussions with Mike Weideli, Charles Roper and Sally Rankin and will be released (when finalised) in the next version of Recorder. We would like to welcome your input and ideas in this process in order to help us to finalise the details of the specification change (in particular the text wording on the new screen and potentially suggestions of which lists may be excluded in annex as well as any other more general coments ).

It would be good to post your comments on the forum to involve others in the debate rather than emailing me directly.

Many thanks for your input,
Lynn

Re: Proposed changes to Recorder for reporting on species designations

Just to add a bit to this. I had a useful chat with Stuart and there are a couple of other points to throw into this:
- we could make the designation selection screen like the other for admin areas or people etc. This would allow the user to select a set but also refine what elements they want out of the set. This would then make the filter irrelevant for status info and we could just drop that element from the filter screen
- he also suggested an additional report that was produced for the ISR. Essentially this breaks down the species list into designations. So it would list all the species in your report that are listed on W&CA, then those that are RDB etc. So in essnce the same species name may well occur more than once in the list (under different headings). DO people think that is something that would be useful.
Let me know

I really like both of those points - they would be very useful indeed.

Re: Proposed changes to Recorder for reporting on species designations

If you can't comment on the actual functionality of the new designation features, it would be good to know what designations you use (or would use) on a regular basis. Do you use sets or groups of designations in your reporting? If so, let us know here so we can get a good idea of what sets to include by default in Recorder. Here are some example 'sets':

All Designated Species excluding Northern Ireland
All European Designated
All UK Legally Protected
Wildlife & Countryside Act
IUCN Red Lists

Re: Proposed changes to Recorder for reporting on species designations

Whilst not on R6, I would think that for designation reporting, two options should be available:
1. Reporting that provides species with a single designation abbreviation field = simgle row each record
2. Reporting as suggested by Stuart that breaks down records by desihnation = multiple row each record

I aimagine most if not all users will have some degree of 'local' lists of one kind or another (LBAP lists for a start): I would presume functionality would be included to create new lists, add species to these lists and report on them?
