Topic: Non unique email address

A user tried to create an account on SEWBReCORD yesterday and received this error:

Array ( [person:email_address] => This email address must be unique, i.e. not shared with another person. ) .

Is this new behaviour, and how does it work, as there does not appear to be a second account with the same email address on SEWBReCORD. I can give the email address in question directly if need, but I don't think it is appropriate to post it here. I should add that the there is no second account with the same address on SEWBReCORD, so it must be elsewhere in the iRecord world.

The thing is, we are promoting the LERC Wales app and to link it to their SEWBReCORD account the need to use the same email address (as far as I understand) to allow the accounts to be linked. If this is a recent change then it could undermine everything we've been telling people on how to use the system!
Best wishes,
Dsve

Re: Non unique email address

Hi Dave,

My name is Andrew van Breda, I am John's brother and also an Indicia developer. I have seen this problem on the NPMS system I work on for BRC. The problem I have been experiencing is caused by the main database (The Warehouse) already containing an account with the same email address that is being entered, but is held in a different case.
As it is a Warehouse bug, the account does not need to be related to your SEWBReCORD project, it can be for another website sharing the Warehouse.

For example, the issue would happen in the following scenario:
Someone registers on iRecord with an email address of abc@test.com, but then tries to register on your project as ABC@test.com.
Part of the code thinks this is the same email address, and part of the code thinks it is a different one.

After seeing your message, I retested the problem and found it was no longer broken. I approached John about this and he said he had already noticed and fixed the problem just a few days back.
Given this, could you retry your situation, could you let me know if you have the same problem again so I can look into it, as in that case there might be a different bug.

Re: Non unique email address

Thanks Andrew (and John),
I'll try a test account and see if the problem recurs.

Re: Non unique email address

Hi, Just picking this up again.
I am still having the problem where iRecord cannot create a new account because the email address is in the system:
The e-mail address xxx.xxxx@gmail.com is already registered. Have you forgotten your password?

And the request new password gives:
Sorry, xxx.xxxx@gmail.com is not recognized as a user name or an e-mail address.

So presumably there is an account on one of the many indicia sites out there, but not iRecord. Contact me off the forum if you need the users email address.

Re: Non unique email address

Just a thought - gmail ignores dots in email addresses (so charlie.barnes@gmail.com is the same as charliebarnes@gmail.com). I wonder if the registration system realizes this but the reset password system doesn't?

I.e. try using xxxxxxx@gmail.com to reset the password.

Re: Non unique email address

Nice idea Charlie, but sadly that didn't work.

Re: Non unique email address

Um...not sure why this isn't working.
I can look at the Warehouse, it should work ok if we match up the case of what you are entering with what is in the database. I will contact you using the forum messenger.

Re: Non unique email address

I Andy, Sorry for not posting earlier, by John fixed it for me. The system had blocked the user because they had not activated the account, possibly because the email went to their spam folder. I'm still waiting to hear back from him over whether he's actually received it now that the account has been unblocked. We can continue this conversation of the forum.

Re: Non unique email address

No problem. I can see email address does existing on the Warehouse, so he would almost certainly get it unless it went into junk
