Topic: No Blackbird?

Well, there are quite a lot really - over 9.5M records and perhaps the species with the most records on the NBN Atlas. However, if you go to https://species.nbnatlas.org/ and type 'Blackbird' you can't find the common resident species Turdus merula.

If one looks on https://species.nbnatlas.org/species/NH … 674#names, it appears that we have 10 different Welsh names for Blackbird, but no English ones.

Just delving a bit further, I see that the English name for Blue Tit (8.7M records for Cyanistes caeruleus) is also missing. One would assume that other bird names are also missing (although not all). Have some of these names disappeared since launch?

Please let me know if you need any help with a definitive list of English bird names, happy to help.

Thanks

Re: No Blackbird?

Hi Andy,
Yes, Blackbird and Blue Tit were missing from the UK Species Inventory, which means that the names are missing in the NBN Atlas. Both have now been added to the UKSI. We are waiting for signoff from the NHM to upload the latest version of the UKSI to the Atlas.

The issue for Blackbird on github is here: https://github.com/nbnuk/nbnatlas-issues/issues/172

I am sorry for any inconvenience, and as soon as the UKSI is updated on the Atlas I will write a message on the forum.

If you could send me a definitive list of English bird names, I will check them against the UKSI. I knew about Blackbird but not Blue Tit, it is highly likely that there are more missing.

Many thanks, Sophie

Re: No Blackbird?

Thanks Sophie, I will do. As it happens, the taxonomic approach behind the official list of UK birds is changing slightly from Jan 1st 2018. I will contact you and Chris Raper with the new list shortly.
