Topic: Finding Species

I am not sure how to go about finding if a species is anywhere in the Dictionary. It seems that I have to try all the possible lists to be sure that a species is not there or to find out where it is. I suspect there is a way, but can't  see how to do it. Sorry for the novice question.

Second question. I am on v6.17 and haven't had any reason to upgrade as it meets my needs, but I see I have to upgrade to
after 6.18 to get the latest dictionary upgrades. Am I likley to encounter any problems with doing this.

Re: Finding Species

Hi Andrew, in the "find taxon" dialog box you need to change the drop down from Restrict Searches to Current Checklist to "Preferred Checklists" in the first instance, or "Unrestricted" if you still can't find what you are looking for (as this takes longer, especially if you are using a * wildcard).

The cunning little bit of less than intuitive design is that to see these two options you have to scroll UP in the drop down!

Re: Finding Species

I hadn't realised it, but the way the find on taxa  is working isn't what is supposed to happen  and is a  bug. In each R6 session the 'find taxa' window is supposed to open with 'Unrestricted' as the selected option which is at the top of the list. Then when you select a Rucksack or one of the other options like 'Preferred'  or 'Current List' it should remember the last one used and open with that the next time you use find in the session . Not sure when this bug crept in, but it should be fixed in 6.25 which hopefully will be available shortly.

Regarding an upgrade from 6.17.  This shouldn't be a problem, but I suggest that you wait for 6.25. The upgrade to the Dictionaries back that far will be a fairly time consuming task. Probably it is best done in stages rather than in one go. Please ask for more help when you are ready to attempt this.
