CEH WALLINGFORD
The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK's Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences.

The Biological Records Centre (BRC) is the national custodian of data on the distribution of wildlife in the British Isles, and maintains an information system for non-native species in Europe.

We are seeking a web developer to construct and maintain websites for the capture, integration and dissemination of key biological data sets. You will play a key role in the development of new initiatives for online data capture and websites to integrate a range of information about species. You will also contribute to related applications that seek to allow data to be shared amongst scientists and other environmental practitioners, as well as to provide outreach to the public as a whole.

You will have a flair for computing and demonstrate an aptitude to learn a range of IT skills in pursuit of a career in biodiversity informatics.
Training and development in new areas of technology will be an important component of this role. You will be a qualified information specialist preferably with proven hands-on experience with a range of relevant data access and data management systems.  You will require experience with a RDBMS (preferably SQLServer), and skills in object-oriented programming (preferably Java) and/or dynamic web-building tools. You will need good time management skills and the ability to communicate with other team members and project managers. A first degree and at least two years post graduate experience in a relevant field are necessary. You will be able to adopt new solutions in a rapidly changing technical area.  An interest in environmental issues and natural history would be a distinct advantage.

The salary for this post is £22,220 progressing to £27,440 per annum.  In addition we'll support your career development and you'll enjoy a rewards package that includes NERC's public sector pension scheme, 30 days' annual leave and 10.5 days' public and privilege holiday per annum.

LANCASTER UNIVERSITY
We are seeking a web developer for a four and half year position to work at the cutting edge of internet technologies to integrate and disseminate biodiversity information. The post will provide technical development of the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway in support of a BIG Lottery Fund project to create an OPen Air Laboratories (OPAL) network. The purpose of the job is to develop web-based databases and applications, focusing on geographic data on habitats and species. To succeed in this post, you will need proven, hands-on experience with a wide range of relevant data access and data management systems. You will require experience with a RDBMS (preferably SQLServer) and Geographic Information Systems (preferably ESRI software), and at least two out of: object-oriented programming (preferably Java), dynamic web-building tools, and XML. Within the Lancaster Environment Centre, you will join a lively team of web developers and scientists, and will work closely with the Biological Records Centre, the Applications Development Group within CEH's Environmental Informatics Programme (EIP) and NBN partners.
