Topic: "Disappearing" .bak files

I have a network copy of R6 (v 6.22.2.274 dictionary 2Z) on my laptop running Windows 8. When I take a backup a file called NBNData.bak is created and the default location of this file is in C:\Recorder6\

I've noticed for quite a while that my backup files (.bak) keep disappearing some time after the backups have been taken. The only thing I can put this phenomenon down to is that when I run McAfee Antivirus, the .bak files are taken out of the directory on the C:\ drive.

There is no indication during the running of the Antivirus that these files have been quarantined or deleted, and there is no indication anywhere in the C:\ drive about where these files have gone. Having once lost a batch of ten historical backups in this way I've now got used to keeping backup copies on a DVD.

Has anyone else experienced anything of this nature?

Re: "Disappearing" .bak files

Might be something Windows is doing with .bak files. There is nothing special about the Recorder 6 folder and R6 will not be deleting them. What happens if you change  the extension ?

Re: "Disappearing" .bak files

Looks like it's caused by use of a "PC Tune-up" software called Iolo System Mechanic. It happens when I run this software. For some reason this software considers .bak files as somehow undesirable and deletes them without giving indication that this has been done.

Re: "Disappearing" .bak files

bak files are considered 'wasted space' by some cleanup software - following these instructions may help: http://support.iolo.com/link/portal/160 … Files-tool

(replacing menus.bak with NBNData.bak)

Re: "Disappearing" .bak files

Thanks very much Charlie - that looks like very useful information. I'll have a deeper look into this when I get bak home this weekend
