Topic: Missing species

Hi all,
I have had a query from a recorder who wishes to submit a record for Viola riviniana, Common Dog-violet (NHMSYS0000464897) - a pretty common species with 76,716 records on the NBN Gateway. It doesn't seem to be on the UK Master list that supports the BRC community warehouse - I can't find it on our own site (CEDaR) or on iRecord.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Fiona

Re: Missing species

Hi Fiona
The species was in the database, but missing from the search index table, so I've refreshed that. Should be fine now.

Re: Missing species

Hi John,

How would I refresh the search terms if I ever had to solve a similar problem?

Jim.

Re: Missing species

Good morning all,

I am having a similar issue to Fiona, but with recorders trying to record Whale/Dolphin Species.

We are running a public participation survey and many of the participants want to record (for example) Dolphin, but without going to species level.  The order (marine mammals) exist in the UK Master Species list (codes below), but you can't seem to enter this on iRecord (or equivalent).  Does this mean that they are not added to the search index table referred to in  a previous post or do I need to make a request to have dolphin sp. or whale sp. added to the dictionaries?

Re: Missing species

I've just tracked back the taxonomy in the iRecord taxon list for a typical species which goes as follows:

Common Dolphin, Delphinus delphis NBNSYS0000005181
is a member of genus
Delphinus NBNSYS0000188742
which is a member of family
Delphinidae NHMSYS0000376173
which is a member of order
Cetartiodactyla NHMSYS0021053569

Any of these names can be used for data entry.

Cetartiodactyla is the new name of the order containing whales and dolphins I discover.

Another way to look at this is to Browse UK species, http://www.nhm.ac.uk/research-curation/ … index.html
Animalia > Chordata > Vertebrata > Mammalia > Cetartiodactyla

My conclusion is that iRecord is consistent with the UK Species Inventory.

Hope that helps.
Jim Bacon.

Re: Missing species

Jim,
I changed the changed_date to now(), so that the index entry was regenerated at the next run of the warehouse scheduled tasks.
Cheers

Re: Missing species

Hi John

I took a second approach to looking at this and searched our UK Master List for an external key of NHMSYS0000376171.
This finds two entries, 'Cetacea' and 'Whales and Dolphins', but they are deleted, presumably as a result of a sync with the UKSI. Regenerating the index is probably not going to help Martin in this case.

Hi Martin
One alternative to consider is to create your own species list in Indicia, tailored to your particular project.

Re: Missing species

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your information/reply's.  Great to understand why the names we are expecting to find (E.g. dolphin) are not visible due to the UKSI link.

Yes I did consider having another species list in Indicia, but we are already running an invasive species list (alongside the master list) & I can see a way to have another list added (This is probably my lack of understanding rather than a restriction in Indicia).

Even with good help functions, I think that most members of the public will not be able to find Cetartiodactyla and will need to have common name associated with this redefined Order.  What is the best way to get this associated so the common name can be found in the taxon list in iRecord/Indicia?  Post in the relevant section of the general announcements forum to get NHM staff to associate Cetartiodactyla with whales & Dolphins?

Re: Missing species

Hi Martin

I can see a way to have another list added

Do you mean you can't see a way? Is that to do with adding another list in your warehouse configuration or to do with making use of it on a recording form on your website?

To get updates in to the UK Species Inventory you need to post in the Species Inventory section, http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewforum.php?id=16
You need someone with more taxonomic knowledge than me to tell you how you can best resolve your difficulty.

Jim Bacon.
