Topic: Workstation - Recorder Stopped and will not start

Recorder had been working fine on this workstation until last Wednesday when it wouldn't. I don't have any details because on this occasion our external IT support was contacted and they uninstalled Recorder. Since then the users logon gives this message;
"Windows cannot access \\SWT-SERC\Recorder 6 Server\Recorder.exe” which has been a reoccurring problem when trying to install.
I logged in and found the registry was intact and just copied over the working directory from my own PC. It worked find apart from a complaint about missing map files. If I make changes to the registry for them it stops working. So I figured that was a small price to pay. However when the user logs back in Recorder does not work again.
This would seem to be a permissions thing but I cannot find anything nor could the external IT support. I no longer have direct access to user credentials so cannot check these items directly. Not only that but when I log back in I have exactly the same problem. The only thing I can thing of is removing the registry entries and try again unless someone has any better ideas?

Re: Workstation - Recorder Stopped and will not start

Haven't seen that one before, but I wonder if it is similar to the ongoing problem we have on some of our workstations which is related in some inexplicable way to the registration of Recorder.exe. I don't recognise the message you are getting, but maybe you are on Windows 8?

We have circumvented the problem where it occurs by typing ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew at the command line before running recorder. Might or might not work for you, but I can't see any harm in trying.

Well I'll be $*%. That does indeed work. We are on W7 64 Pro for anyone else with similar problems. I might try putting that into a batch file to make it easier. It still complains about maps missing but I will post that in a new post.

Thanks Rob

Re: Workstation - Recorder Stopped and will not start

It was just a hunch. For us the error manifests as a standard R6 error dialog and the bug report says something unhelpful like "%1 cannot be found", but the fact that it happens right at the beginning and also when installing was the clue for me.

We spent well over a year trying to track the error down and still have no idea why it happens, only on some workstations, but always on those where it does. Maybe something to do with 32bit software in a 64bit environment? My guess is that there is some kind of communications lag with the dns server or something, but clearing the ip cache seems to work. I always have to run from a batch file now.

Problem is we are now having the same problem on our remote access terminals, which are effectively in the same box as the database and fileserver, so there can be no ip issues and we cannot flush the cache. I am stumped on that one...
