Topic: Creating a linked Access DB

I had an Access 2003 database linked to R6, but want to update it to accommodate the new tables.

I have tried following the instructions for manual linking, but at the point where I have to provide a Server instance, there is nothing in the drop-down box, and I am not sure how to identify the server manually.

I have also tried running the .bat file:

"System\DBPlugin.exe_" /standalone "/installdir:C:\Recorder 6\" /mdb

which I think I used before, but that seems not to be doing anything productive.

I am running R6 on a standalone under Vista.

Any advice will be welcome.

Not sure which instruction you are using. Are you setting up a  ODBC link through Control panel or via Access. I always find the ODBC route better.

Re: Creating a linked Access DB

Thanks, Mike.

I was following the method in a file I think you pointed me to in 2011, starting:

>>>
Manual Linking of Access 2007 Database to Recorder 6 SQL Server Database

This paper explains how to manually  link an Access 2007 or 2010 database to the Recorder 6 SQL Server Database. The screenshots are based on a Windows 7 system,  with an  Access Windows 2010 database linked to a Recorder 6 SQL Server database in SQL Server 2008. The process for earlier versions of Access is similar, but the ODBC link is accessed via Files/Get External Data/Link tables and by choosing  ODBC Databases from the list of file types.
<<<

All goes fine until #8, where the screenshot shows a drop-down.  I don't have this (or rather it is empty).

My memory is that when I did this in 2011, I ran the batch file I pasted above (which I also got from you or from the site), and the file was created automatically, but although the file runs (there is a very rapid screen flicker) there is no obvious result.  I have looked for linked Access files in all the likely places without success.

I hope I can solve this one, as I much prefer Access to SQL as the immediate interface for direct editing and creating queries etc.  To be honest, my knowledge of low-level SQL is close to zero!

Just bumping this thread gently in the hope someone has suggestions.

Re: Creating a linked Access DB

Would you like to phone me on 01635 820904 and I will try and talk you through this. Day or Evening is OK, if I am here I will help.  Trying to cover all the options in writing with different versions of Access or SQL Server would be very time consuming.

Re: Creating a linked Access DB

Just recording my thanks to Mike for talking me successfully through the (rather complex) process.  Now I am back in business.
