Topic: Cannot start Recorder

HELP !!!    Recorder will not connect to the SQL database.

When I try to start Recorder I get the following message

“An error occurred whilst starting the application. EOleException: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect0).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied”

When I open SQL Server Management Studio Express, I get the Connect to Server window. When I click on Connect I get the following message….

“Cannot connect to BOB-PC\SQLEXPRESS…Additional information: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider : Shared Memory Provider, error: 40 – could not open a connection to SQL server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)…”

My copy of Recorder 6 is the latest 6.18.1, Dictionary “Q”. I am running a networked version of Recorder 6 on a standalone laptop (this is because I originally tried to install R6 from a standalone disk on Vista - it would not install. A networked copy of R6 was successfully installed under Vista - I later upgraded the laptop to Windows 7)

I have not changed any settings. I last ran R6 a few days ago and have done nothing to R6 settings or to SQL Server in the meantime. Can anyone advise as to where to start to look for the problem??

Re: Cannot start Recorder

This looks like some problem with SQL Server, but I can't understand why it should suddenly occur.  Try going to the SQL Server Configuration manager to see what is/is not  running. You can found this in All Programs/Microsoft SQL Server/Configuartion Tools/SQL Server Configuration Manager/services.  This should bring up the list of SQL Server Services which are running. If anything isn't running right click on it and click restart.

Re: Cannot start Recorder

My copy of R6 (latest version 6.18 Dictionary 1Q) will not run because I cannot gain access to SQL Server. I have been unable to sort the problem. The machine is running Windows 7 32 bit

I have recent .bak files made under 6.18/1Q.

I urgently need clarification from someone (anyone) on the following :-

If I reinstall R6 and SQL Server 2008 Express R2 + tools on another machine (Windows 7 32-bit), bring the installed R6 up to the latest version and R6 starts successfully I will have an empty database. Can I restore from a .bak which was made under 6.18/1Q and SQL Server 2005 (repeat 2005) a few days before I lost access to R6?

I have NBNData_Data.mdf and its associated log file that I have dragged off my C:\ drive (dated 1/7/13, the last day that R6 worked OK)

The normal procedure would be to Stop SQL Server, detach database (which I can’t do), copy .mdf and .ldf, and reattach database (which of course I can’t do). Is that correct?

Will these .mdf and .ldf files be OK to attach to SQL Server if for any reason I can’t restore using the .bak approach?
