Topic: Allow area rather than point data

Hi all,

Is it possible for the Add Record page of PlantTracker (http://planttracker.naturelocator.org/add) to allow for the addition of drawn areas of coverage an invasive plant rather than point data (which fails to capture the situation in many situations)?  Can iRecord accommodate this type of info?

If so, where does it sit on the scale of complexity to implement (on client side and backend)?  (Where 0 equals "trivial" and 10 equals "forget it"!)

Cheers,
Dave

Re: Allow area rather than point data

Hi Dave
If you are using one of the standard "dynamic forms" then it's really easy - you can go to the form's edit page, then expand the Other Map Settings section. Under Controls to add to map, you can add a control called drawPolygon and it will do it. However, note that this means there is a toolbar and you need to click on the Add Grid Ref or Draw Polygon buttons before you can add anything to the map.

2 issues, first, make sure you test as I don't think this functionality is used much elsewhere. 2nd, bear in mind that other systems may not cope so well with the data!

Re: Allow area rather than point data

Thanks John.

Any feeling for how iRecord would cope?  I think people want to be able to draw plots along rivers for expanses of Himalayan Balsam etc.  I assume the data for the area is a vector (if that's the right word)

Another solution would be to allow people to add multiple points to the map in one go - rather than one per submission.  I assume that's possible too?

Thanks
D
