Topic: Backups of networked Recorder

Is it possible (in theory) to allow the Administrator of a Recorder6 database that is networked to Run backups? I wonder whether it is our computer people who have set it up to stop us using this function or whether that's the norm with the networked version?

Also do you happen to know whether it is possible to load a backup from a networked Recorder database onto a standalone PC ... both are using SQL server version 2008 but presumably not identical. (This, I hasten to add is to create a read-only copy in another office). Are there any tricks I should be aware of?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Backups of networked Recorder

An additional related question:
On my laptop running SQLServer 2008 and Windows 7. I can happily run a back up from within Recorder but am unable to get SQLMSSExp. When I run the backup (leaving it at its default location to save the file) although it produces a message saying it has completed successfully, I cannot find the file anywhere on the computer

Re: Backups of networked Recorder

What happens if you try the backup or haven't you even go the option ?  If you haven't got the option it will need setting up in SQL Server Tools.  It may be that your IT Dept have disabled this.   Yes you can restore from backup on a different machine.
In some setups you can use the Recorder 6 restore as long as the file is put in the folder which R6 has set up for backups. Versions before 6.17 don't allow this though and restores on different machine have to be done via SQL Server tools.

In answer to your second question, the backup is there I would think, but possibly in a hidden folder. By deafult it will be in C:\Progam Files\Microsft SQL Server.  In v 61.7 up you should be able to find the backup location using  Tools\DatBase Tools\View or Change Backup location.  In versions before 6.17 I wouldl advise not to try this, becaseu it coudl stop the backups from working.

Re: Backups of networked Recorder

Thanks Mike (sorry for asking several questions at once!). Thanks for the useful reply to the first part. I dont think I'll be able to persuade our computer people though...

The second question is about running a backup from within SQL Server ... yes I have searched the whole computer and I was looking for a file called NBNData_Backup.bak (because that is what it says the Destination is in the Back Up window of SQLServerExpress).... but I see now that it is putting it where I asked RECORDER to put it and calling it NBNData.bak

Problem solved!
