Topic: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Upgrade 6.18.1  is now available as a ReleaseCandidate at www.Recorder6.Info/UpgradeKitfrom6.14to618Build259RC.zip . Also available is the associated Dictionary Upgrade www.Recorder6.info/00000015,16,17,18,19,1A.zip .  Details on installing the upgrades togther with the release notes are available at  www.Recorder6.info/R6v618ReleaseNotesRC.doc  . Please download and read the release notes before installing the upgrades.

The Release Candidate  is a version of the Recorder 6 upgrade (Version 6.18 build 259) which has been tested and which we believe to be in its final form, but which we would like to have installed on a few systems before making it more generally available.  If you install the release candidate then you may need to run the final upgrade version when it becomes available on the JNCC web site.

The Dictionary update populates the new Organism table and will take a long time to run (typically 2 hours, but possibly much more).   See the release notes for more information.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

I have installed the ugrade and the dictionary updates and it seems to work, but I will keep watching.

I did have a problem initially though. The installer failed the first time I tried, producing the following error:

exception class   : EDBUpgraderError
exception message : Error occurred running script 0000008Q.sql. The error is described as: Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_USABLE_TABLE'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'USABLE_TABLE'.

I tried a second time to no avail, but then I ran the script 8Q manually using management studio to track down the error details. It was being caused by trying to insert a key which begain LC000021 (so that must be something we had got from Mike in the past). Anyway the second time I attemtped to run 8Q manually it worked, so I assume that something later on in the script removed the offending key, allowing it to work properly.

After that the installer ran through without errors and I am now updating the indexes.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

I have just noticed something odd though. After the upgrade there is now an entry in the locations hierarchy called Vice-counties, with all the vice-counties as subsites of it. I had never noticed this being visible before.

Is this something deliberate. or was it unintended?

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Script 8Q is doing the delete in the wrong order.  Only affects anyone who has loaded my scripts previously.

As far as I know the Vice Counties have always been there.  Nothing we have done has added to or changed this either in the application or the Dictionary upgrade

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Mike, I've not tested the RC here on the NMRS but I do have a question. For ID 206 Allow the output of Eastings and Northings for Sample from Report Wizard; will these new report attributes use the same keys as per http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=8166#p8166 ? If so, the new report attributes should  simply overwrite the old ones. If not, I suspect the 'old' report attributes will need to be deleted?

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

We should have picked up all the cases where I have  previously made available UDF etc. which are now built into the system. However, sometimes I have given users early versions using different  keys and names. If this happens the report attributes etc. could be in under  two different names. In which case the previous one will need to be removed manually. The worst thing that could happen is that the update script will not run because some of the entries are already there.  Most of the report changes are in script 0000008W with a few in  0000008Q. Looks like 0000008W has run for Rob so hopefully this isn't going to be a major issue.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

For information, (as before) I had problems with the database expected to be NBNData (USE [NBNData] occurs in some of the script files)

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Thanks.  We don't need NBNData  in the scripts and will make sure they are not  there in future.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Mike,

The error, whereby when editing a record the comment is not displayed nor editable is still present in 6.18.1

This error seems to reliably occur if the main Event/Sample window is opened when the "enter single record" window is open

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Hi Mike

No problems here with running the upgrade; good to see many of the fixes.

I do have a number of species that are not picking up the new format Recommended Taxon Sort Order from the Organism table and so aren't reporting the new fields of Taxon Family, Taxon Order, etc.  Is this likely to be peculiar to my copy because of my previously reported dictionary issues (http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=2399, post 12), or a general problem that needs reporting (to Chris?).

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Hi

Can you give me some examples please. Names and keys if possible (key from Dictionary/Taxa then using the meta data button, or from the Extra info addin).  At the moment it will not pick up User added taxa, but should  pick up everthing else.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Many thanks. On the few I have checked I have the  same problem in my Dictionary so it doesn't look like it is related to any Dictionary problem specific to you, although I can only find 149.  Needs more in depth investigation.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Hi Mike,

I took the plunge and decided to upgrade. The Recorder 6 part of the upgrade appears to have worked, however, the dictionary upgrade is another story. As soon as I ran it it crashed with an exception, something to do with the Organism table not being available (as it wasn't there) but I didn't keep the error regretfully. The upgrade ran for 4 hours and I had to let it run, for a further 36 hours, as I had to go to London yesterday. This morning I find it still running (or hanging?) so I stopped it. The ORGANISM table is empty.

Shall I rerun the dictionary upgrade again at some point?

The ORGANISM table is present. This I'm 99% sure is the same exception as previously reported.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Further to my last, by adding "Use [NBNData]" to "TRUNCATE TABLE ORGANISM" (00000015.sql) I was able to fix the initial exception. I now have a further exception about 10 seconds into the routine (00000016.zip?) as follows:

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Many thanks for your comments,  I am am very interested in the experiences on this because it is the biggest dictionary upgrade we have every done. I have divided up the Organism table into four, because the whole thing wouldn't run as one. Upgrade 15 truncates the table. This is really only there for the few people who did some testing on earlier version of the upgrade. Upgrades 16/17/18/19 then populate each of the 4 part of  the Organism table.  Finally 1A deletes the contents of the index tables.  I have tested it on some very slow machines (Xp, Windows7 and windows 8)  and although it has taken a long time it seems to get there eventually, but for some unknown reason sometimes stopping it and then starting again it has worked faster.  One option would be to run each section separately. this means removing 17/18 and 19 from the scripts file and running the upgrade, then adding back in  17 and running again and so on.  No need to update the index tables between each upgrade.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Ok Mike, just finished the dictionary upgrade (all 4 together in under 1 hour without error) and it completed successfully with 107,952 records in the ORGANISM table.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Hi,

I've just upgraded my personal copy of R6 (Windows 7/SQL Server 2008 R2) and have 108,222 entries in the ORGANISM table which matches the total of records in the 4 dictionary upgrades 00000016, 00000017, 00000018 and 00000019.

Looks like I will have to run the dictionary upgrades again on the NMRS server (Windows 2003 Server/SQL Server 2005) as there's 270 missing entries.

Both upgrades popped up the "Upgrade successful" dialogue.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

This could possibly be down to something not right with the NMRS dictionary. I will give you a report which identifies the missing Organism entries and  if there is some reason for them not being there.

Re: Recorder 6.18.1 - Release Candidate

Attached is a report which will list any missing Organisms. Once it has run we need to check to see if the Taxon_version_Key it returns are present in the full Organism table. If you send me the results I can check this or you can check it against the Organism table you have at home. If the entries are in the full table then the problem is in the population of the table in the Dictionary upgrade. It would then be worth you running the upgrade again, by changing the Dict Seq in the setting table to 00000015 (not 14), so that the upgrade is run again without deleting what is already there.  If they are not in the full Organism table then this means the Dictionary has some missing or incorrect data. I may be able to work out why this is has happended from the list.
