Topic: Black bryony

I'm being told by Recorder (the Extra info addin) that Black bryony, Tamus communis has a recommended taxon name of "Dioscorea communis" - but this taxon doesn't seem to appear on the VASCULAR plants list? It seems to only exist in the List of additional names.

(Now with a bit headache over preferred/recommended names!!)

Re: Black bryony

Hi Charlie

In Europe Tamus has been sunk as a synonym of Dioscorea but the British list is still favouring Tamus, as of the recent Stace. But even in Stace he acknowledges that it could possibly be a synonym, I understand. I am reliably informed that the BSBI are likely to adopt Dioscorea in the not too distant future when the vascular plants list is updated so ... watch this space ;)

Re: Black bryony

It's one of Mikes addins which provides extra info on taxon occurrences (see attached) - see http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=16151#p16151
(PS thanks Chris - I know I'm going to get a lot of comments re: Dioscorea vc. Tamus ...!)

Re: Black bryony

I should add that my sudden and authoritative knowledge of Black Bryony taxonomy is largely due to a chat I had today with Fred Rumsey & Mark Spencer of the NHM British Herbarium ;)
