Hi all,
Has anyone managed to install the above?
I presume no-one has, or not done so yet.
I tried installing the software you can download from the NBN web-site to generate vice county boundaries on my 64-bit Windows 7 PC but it wouldn’t install. The message was ‘The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.’ However, I was able to download the whole county polygon folder and import one of those into Recorder 6.
I tried running the Program Compatibility troubleshooter but it didn’t return any useful information. I then considered installing Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 but to do that you need to enable hardware-assisted virtualization if it isn’t already enabled. It isn’t enabled on my Windows 7 PC and I am not keen to attempt the BIOS changes required, especially as the instructions are specific to OEM models and more involved than most for my Sony PC. The software to generate vice county boundaries is supplied by the NBN, not JNCC, so it doesn’t fall within our remit to support Recorder 6 but I will report the problem to the NBN.
Hi Sally,
Many thanks for trying, you've experienced the same error and dilemma as me! Thanks also for raising it with the NBN.
Hi all,
All the Vice County boundaries are available to download from the NBN website (http://nbn.org.uk/SpecialPages/WVCB-Download.aspx) in both ESRI and MapInfo format, so the boundaries can be downloaded directly from the NBN website without the need for the software tool.
However, the Software Tool contains an application to extract individual or groups of Vice County Boundaries, and it doesn’t install on 64-bit Windows 7 PC systems.
At the moment there is no resource to rectify this, but it would be useful to know whether there is a big demand for the software tool to install on 64-bit systems and so please post on here if it is something you would like us to look at.
Thank you.
Mandy
Hi Mandy,
The National Moth Recording Scheme is interested as I'm sure a number of Vice-county Moth Recorders who have jurisdiction over multiple VC's.
I too run 64-bit Windows 7, so would find it useful. However, I'm going to try installing and running this on an old netbook with XP on, then copying the resulting files across. Quite a lot of messing about, but should work OK?

Yes, please (in answer to your final paragraph)
Just tried to install the software to pull out some VC boundaries and I too am having the exact same problem of incompatibility. I need to undertake this procedure on 2 machines - one a Win-7 64-bit machine and the other a Windows Vista 64-bit machine.
Please can resources be found sometime SOON to enable this facility to actually be used on 64-bit architecture machines !!!!
This problem is now well over 2 years old. Left to fester as it is it will never be used to its full and its potential for usage will never materialise.
Thank you.
Steve
As the boundaries are downloadable in ESRI format, I don't see why this is an issue. Surely the whole set can be imported to Recorder and then the unwanted ones deleted. Might be better to use a small proportion of the resources to produce a step-by-step guide on how to do this.
Or am I missing something?
Must admit Rob that you are right. Thank you.
Whilst I am on: Can I request that boundary files for ALL LRC's are added to this page (not all LRCs conform to a Vice County boundary).
Cheers.
Steve
Hi all,
Just to check and clarify:
1. You can work around this 64-bit issue by importing the full set of boundaries into Recorder and then deleting the unwanted ones.
2. You would like a step-by-step guide on how to do this.
3. You would like boundary files for all LRCs adding to the VCB page on the NBN website
I'm not sure how quickly points 2 and 3 could be done, but we can at least get them onto the requirements list.
Thanks,
Mandy
Yes, Mandy - that would be superb. Thank you.
Steve
Thanks Steve. We'll see what we can do.
