Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Now that Windows Vista has been unleashed upon the world, has anyone tried running Recorder on it? If so, how was it?

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I have manged to install RECORDER 6 on a Vista machine. Although MSDE is not supposed to work with VISTA it did install.  Recorder 6 (v6.7.2a)  then installed against the instance. The upgrade to 6.9.3 would not run.  Vista does not give automatically gives users Admin rights and installs some files as read only, which causes problems.  I have found that if you install SQL Server Express then MSDE will not install. This is the case even after you have removed SQl Server Express. It looks as though Recorder 6 can be installed under Vista, but some changes to the install  will be required before this becomes an easy thing to do.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Is there any more information on the problems of installing or running R6 on a Vista machine? I have to replace my laptop (urgently) and could still get one with XP rather than Vista if there is good reason to, but don't know whether the problems are serious enough to justify taking such a backwards step. Any advice appreciated!

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I've successfully installed Recorder 6 onto a Vista machine with SQL Express 2005 and it is working well. I would definitely chalk in some support with Mike if you go the Vista route as it can be problematic.

Perhaps Sarah can update this thread with the official JNCC line on Vista support?

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Janet, On my laptop running windows vista home edition none of the addins in Recorder 2002 are recognised as addins and do not load into Recorder. It seems that I will therefore need to change to Recorder 6 (with SQL Express 2005 as I don't think MSDE is supported but may be wrong), just waiting for Sarah to try it out

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I'd be interested to know if there are different issues in different versions of Vista. From what I gather there are different degrees of user control over security settings in the different versions (at least between Home versions and the rest).

Incidentally, I've just bought a new PC with Vista Home Premium pre-installed and I'm not happy with it in many respects (not least because System Restore keeps getting corrupted!) and wish I'd stuck with XP. I haven't yet seen any advantages (for me at any rate). Haven't tried installing Recorder 6 on it yet.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Hi Alan,

you may have already seen this:

What does not supported mean?
Not supported means not supported on Vista. Microsoft will not release fixes related to problems on Vista. Our support organization will not provide support for running MSDE on Vista. We make no claims of any kind about MSDE functionality on Vista. I know what you're thinking, you want to ask if it will install…
Windows does not do anything to block MSDE from installing on Vista, but you will get a warning indicating that MSDE is not supported. I've heard some anecdotal reports that MSDE does not survive the upgrade from Windows XP to Vista. This is all really a moot point since Microsoft will not support MSDE on Vista. You will best server your own customers by migrating your applications to SQL Express rather than trying to run an unsupported configuration.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

For what its worth, I found SQL Server 2005 Express (and the full SQL Server 2005) performed much better than MSDE and, if you write custom queries against the database, then there's a whole slew of new Transact-SQL functionality to play with, so it's worth moving to MSSQL2005 if you have the opportunity.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Thanks for all these comments. I've decided to give it a go, but on Vista Business rather than Home and using SQL Server 2005 rather than MSDE. Should be interesting!

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I tried an install on Vista Home Premium last night, through an administrator account, having previously installed SQL Server 2005 Express (with mixed mode authentication set up). The Recorder install failed after the re-boot and after logging into the SQL Server instance, as it's trying to attach the data files - "[SQL-DMO] service control error - access denied."

The error occurs whether I log in to SQL Server through the sa account or via my Windows account. I've tried setting "Full Control" permissions for administrators and for Owner on the MSSQL data folder, but the error still occurs.

Any thoughts?

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Hi Alan

Have you tried disabling User Account Control before doing the install? This is probably preventing Recorder from placing the database in the required folder.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I have Vista running a live R6 system and it seems ok once installed. I have also installed on the Home and Business editions of Vista as a test.  MSDE will install (it does complain during install) and R6  runs with this, though I suggest that SQL Server Express is a better choice unless you need to convert from R2002. If you have to install MSDE to do the transfer from R2002 then I suggest you remove it once the transfer is complete and install SQL Express. You should install the SQL Express tools to help with this and they are also useful for other things.

The way I have found works best for a standalone install  is as follows.

1 .Install SQL Server Express (and the tools)
2. Insert  R6 CD, but do not choose set up option. Instead view CD and right click on Setup.exe. Choose  ‘Run as Administrator”.
3. Installation proceeds normally until re-reboot.
4. After reboot the Select SQL Server Windows appears. Cancel this. (Continuing will produce an error)
5. Open C:\Program Files\Recorder 6 . Find DBPlugin and right click on this and  click on “Run as Administrator”
6. Process should now complete
7. There could  still be problems with accessing various folders and permissions on these may need  changing.  Some processes may not run (ie importing) unless Recorder 6 is opened  as  administrator, but more investigation is required.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I tried Mike's method last night, installing from an ordinary User account (doing Run As Administrator) and onto SQL Server Express 2005. It seems to have gone fine.

I have to start Recorder using Run As Administrator to get it to go at all, but from a brief test I can add surveys, events etc., run reports, send reports to a map or to a snapshot database, and make a rucksack.

Looking promising so far.

Cheers

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Hi I have followed the above thread and installed SQL Server Express and Recorder 6 apparently successfully. I am now following the excellent tutorial. However when I come to run database backup I get the following:

An unhandled error occured in Recorder 6. Don't worry (but I do worry! - my insertion :(  ). Send this error message to ....

I did start Recorder6 with Run as Administrator.

I shall send the error to jncc but as Vista is not supported, it may not be reasonable to expect an answer.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Hi John,

I have just installed R6 on Vista, with only a few problems so far but with this same error with the backup. I was able to get round it by changing the backup location to a folder on the c: drive where I hold documents and other files. It doesn't work for the default temp folder or for a folder under Program Files.

That would be Vista's new more restrictive permissions on where applications can place files. Going forward, Recorder should really be updated to place user files in user folders rather than in "system" folders such as Program Files.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I have tried this and still get an error - cannot open NBNData.bak. I have put all the files named in the locations list plus the back up location in my C:\....\Documents\Recorder 6\ folder and run Recorder as Administrator from my normal user account and using the default login id and password. Does this file need to exist? - I cannot find it on my system.

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

I think the Documents folder is also protected under Vista, but can't prove it as my R6 won't let me set it as a backup location. Have you tried creating a new folder directly on the c: drive, c:\R6 backup or something like that?

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

The Documents folder would be protected against other users from accessing it (e.g., user "John" wouldn't be able to access the Documents folder of "Jane"). So perhaps Recorder is running as a different user? Either way, the easiest solution should be to simply create a new folder directly under C: as Janet suggests.

Thanks for your help, Janet. You are absolutely right. I created a backup folder as C:\Recorder 6 and it has worked fine. :)

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

Does anyone know whether the software and dictionary updates will run under Vista? This is a concern if we are going to have to wait until the version after next for this environment to be fully supported. Will we be able to apply the next release?

Re: Recorder on Windows Vista?

To add to the previous posts on Backup, Restore from the changed location does work but it gives an error when it tries to Login to the restored database. R6 then hangs and can only be stopped by using End Task from the Windows Task Manager. There is no problem when the system is restarted so this doesn't seem to be doing any damage. Is it going to cause any problems that are not immediately apparent?
