Re: Restore empty database

Recently I tried to restore an empty database (renamed to NBNData.bak) into my standalone installation of R6 (v 6.17 dictionary Y). This failed with the exception message "Could not find stored procedure 'usp_Polygon_Layers_Get'." This empty database was saved to my backups folder a couple of upgrades ago (I don't remember which precisely). I then restored my existing database successfully. I tried this because I may wish in the future to import someone else's database and keep it entirely separate from mine but on the same R6 installation. Is this a feasible proposition or am I flying off in completely the wrong direction? Is there anything I should do to a backup made when the R6 installation was of an earlier version or dictionary edition should I want to restore it?

Re: Restore empty database

A given database will usually only work properly with a specific  version of Recorder.  So for example a restored  database which went with V6.14 will not work,  or at least cause problems,  if you try to run it with V6.17.   This is because R6 upgrades not only update the application sofware, but also change the database.

In many cases you will probably be Ok if, after restoring the database, you run the upgrades to bring it into line with the version of Recorder you are running. You do need to be careful with some upgrades though, because they will only work if the Dictionary is upgraded at least to a certain point. In these cases you would also need to run the required Dictionary upgrades.

Also backups of other users databases will probably not restore via Recorder and you would need to use SQL Server  Management tools to restore from the backups.
