Re: Validating grid references

As a new user, I would appreciate some help with the following.
I am using the latest version of Recorder with Windows 7.
I wish to import a series of records, each has a location, location name, grid reference and VC number. I wish to validate the grid references using the VC grid squares. So I imported the records omitting the location and assumed that any records with grid reference outside the VC would be rejected. My survey has no boundary set, just a name.
The test import contained 3 records with invalid grid references, one was rejected, the other 2 included.
Am I making a fundamental error somewhere?

Thanks

Sorry, Recorder doesn't validate against the VIce Counties.

Re: Validating grid references

Before importing to Recorder you could try running through Record Cleaner? I think you'd have to check a vice-county at a time though. Record Cleaner can be downloaded from the NBN website somewhere but not sure where as did the NBN training in it last week but haven't downloaded it yet.

Re: Validating grid references

Recorder 6 doesn’t validate grid references against vice county boundaries but it does contain 10 km grid squares for vice counties – see Geo Info – Grid Squares in the location hierarchy – and it does check that a grid ref. is in the grid squares for a vice county when you set a column type to Vice-County Number in the import wizard or if you use a vice county as a location. However, this is a rather crude check as a grid ref. could be in a grid square for a vice county but not actually within the vice county boundary. This probably accounts for only one of your 3 invalid grid refs being rejected.

The record cleaner is available from http://www.nbn.org.uk/Record-Cleaner.aspx

Re: Validating grid references

Thank you everyone, this has made the position clear.
It wasn't my preferred method of checking grid references, but it was worth asking the question.
