Re: OS Map Tiles and Recorder 6

Dear All,

I recently wanted to install some new OS map tiles from NBN using the CD pack I had since using R2002. It wouldn't work and so I contacted NBN who sent me the Recorder6 Upgrade disk. Great! - I was then confident that it would work - it didn't of course and I got the message "Recorder not properly installed - cannot find site ID", which is nonsense because Recorder is properly installed - I use it every day.  I have Recorder6 installed on a laptop running Windows7. Insertion of upgrade disk and installation appears to go OK until the end when I get the "Loading" window after which I get the error message. The OS Maps folder is generated in the Recorder directory. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Is Windows 7 the problem?

The installation of the upgrade works like a dream on a Recorder6 installation running on Windows XP, and the necessary unlock code is successfully requested from NBN.

Re: OS Map Tiles and Recorder 6

Does http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=9129#p9129 help? Please note the post that follows it as well. Permissions may also be a problem – see ‘Installing OS map tiles’ at http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=4981 . If you have installed with Windows 7 and put the Recorder 6 folder in Program Files you probably won’t have the permissions you need to write to the Map Files folder.

If the map tiles you want to use have been installed in a previous installation of Recorder 6 or Recorder 2002 you can install them using the .gsf files from that, bypassing the map tile selector. Copy the .gsf files to a folder accessible to the current installation but outside the Recorder 6 folder then either install them one by one using Map – Add Background Layer or use the Bulk Load add-in. The ReadMe.txt file that is in the download available from http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-4597 explains how to install and use it.

Re: OS Map Tiles and Recorder 6

Thanks for the info Sally. Have now read the posts on this.

I've gone down the route of recreating the links to the Access database, although I don't see why this should be the problem because I use the Access database to run my link to DMAP and this works OK. But still, some of the tables I need for NBN map tiles might not be linked properly. I downloaded the software to recreate the links. Because I have a network version on my standalone laptop I understand that I have to edit the CreateAccessLinkedTables.bat file in Notepad.

My copy of Recorder 6 isn't in Program Files but is in C:\Recorder 6 Server and C:\Recorder 6 Workstation

Presumably I edit the bat file
"System\DBPlugin.exe_ " /standalone "/installdir:C:\Program Files\Recorder 6\"/mdb
to
"System..........................................................C:\Recorder 6 Server\"/mdb and save the editing.

When I then click on the bat file to run it I get the little DOS window and then a message "Exception EFOpenError in module DBPlugin.exe_ at 0002256A. Cannot open file "C:\Recorder 6 Server\InstallSettings.ini". The system cannot find the file specified."

Any clues on how to proceed?

Re: OS Map Tiles and Recorder 6

This problem has been ongoing for years. There are many postings on this topic at http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=14
The OS map tiles simply won't install on a fresh install of Recorder 6.
It's high time this problem was fixed, the product is still being advertised and is clearly still not fit for purpose as many other users are discovering.

Re: OS Map Tiles and Recorder 6

Thanks Darwyn,

I will install the tiles I want in another R6 (standalone) installation where I know it works and then copy the gsf files over. There is still apparently a long-standing problem with map tiles and Recorder 6, which from what I have read just now (the posts history on this subject) I think it should be resolved. I simply would not be able to do the work I do with R6 without an adequate mapping facility. I now want to add more tiles but am unable to do so in the normal way.

Re: OS Map Tiles and Recorder 6

I downloaded Rec6_OSMapsR6Setup.zip, the software provided by the NBN for loading the OS map tiles into Recorder 6, and retested it on a new laptop running Windows 7, SQL Server 2008 Express and Recorder 6 v6.15.4.238 0000000Q (in C:\Recorder 6 not C:\Program Files\Recorder 6). It can be downloaded from http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-4648 . It installed as expected. I was able to place orders as expected and it installed 81 map tiles for me. All the map tiles are listed in the Map Layers box on the left hand side of the map window but they were not visible on the map until I had zoomed in because the Cut In was set to 1:250,000. The Cut Out was set to 1:10,000. If you want to see the map tiles without having to zoom in so far you can change the Cut In to say, 1:100,000,000, by selecting a map tile in the Map Layers box, right clicking it, selecting Properties and selecting a different Cut In. This has to be done for each map tile individually although if the map tiles can be loaded using the Bulk Load add-in you can specify the cut-in and cut-out scales to be applied to all the selected map tiles to be loaded in one operation

If the map tiles software doesn’t work for you there is probably a problem with your installation of Recorder 6 but diagnosing problems like this remotely can be difficult. The permissions need to be checked, e.g. can you write to the Map Files folder? This can be tested by saving any file to it. The Access database needs to be checked. Can you open nbndata.mdb and view the contents of the Setting, Base_Map, Computer_Map and Map_Sheet tables? You will only be able to open this file if you have Microsoft Access installed. If anyone can provide further information that may lead to identifying why this problem occurs in some installations it would be appreciated.

Re: OS Map Tiles and Recorder 6

I think these problems may be because the  installation software is trying to conect to Recorder 6 through Windows authentication, but the system has been set up with sa authentication and the login  does not have sufficient permissions in SQL server to write to Recorder via the Access database.

If you have the Management tools installed this can be checked/corrected. Go into the tools using the sa login. Then in NBNData goto Security /Users and see if your normal login is listed. If it isn't   right click on Users then click on New users. You should  be able to
browse and find your login listed, so that you can select and add it. Please request further information if yiu have difficulties.
