Hi,
what is exactly required for a recorder network install:
windows server 2003 or could it run on win xp prof , both for the sql server and file server?

Any of those operating systems would be fine as long as the version of SQL Server you select is supported. The only OS I am aware of not accepting installations is Windows Server 2008.
