Re: Unable to close Observations window

Hi,

I think I may have found a bug in v6.15...

Having created a Moths Rucksack and associated Recording Card, I enter some Observations and save them, everything looks fine.

I then reload the Sample into my Recording Card, amend the Observations and save them fine. However, I am unable to Close the Observations window to refresh that window. The File options to Close or Close All are greyed out and the - and X (top-right corner) to either minimise or close the window has vanished. The only way to close the Observations window is by the keystroke Ctrl/F4.

Another minor irritation I've found is that I can load an 'Imported' Sample into the Recording Card to edit the data, but once I change the data in any way and then save that data I get an Exception Error.

Has anyone else seen these issues?

Re: Unable to close Observations window

I have tested several aspects of this and it is working as expected on my system (v6.15.4.238 0000000Q) when editing data entered using a recording card. After loading a sample into a recording card and amending data the changes are done as expected and I can close the observation hierarchy normally. I tried changing the date, adding measurement data and comments and amending them. When this feature was added in v6.14 it wasn’t intended that users would be able to change all types of data. What were you trying to change? I have noticed other windows in Recorder 6 where the x in the top right corner to close the window is not present. This happens with some xml reports but then there is a Finish button to close them.

However, when trying to use this mechanism to edit data imported using the import wizard, Recorder 6 crashed with the exception message Access violation at address 00405732 in module 'RecorderApp.exe'. Read of address 00000015. I.e. the same message as Nathalie reported in http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=6642#p6642. My system is the custodian of the data I was trying to edit so I should be allowed to edit it. This mechanism allowed me to edit data imported from Recorder 2002. The system allows me to edit data in the observation hierarchy. As the system allows users to do that, I suspect that this bug won’t be given a high enough priority to get it fixed soon unless it is very easy to fix. With a limited budget, JNCC need to concentrate on high priority fixes.

Re: Unable to close Observations window

Hi Sally, thanks for responding...

I forgot to add the Observations window was maximised at the time of loading Sample data into the Recording Card. This is when I can reliably reproduce the error. If the Observations window isn't maximised, I can open a Sample created with Recording Card into a Recording Card template, edit it, save it and close the Observations window normally. Hope this clarifies.

Indeed, I've tried editing both imported data and new data (as custodian) by Recording Card. Only imported data crashes with an exception on saving.

I've also noticed Recording Card will not save any data with 'Present' as an Abundance which is a nuisance! What is the alternative to record the presence of a taxon without an exact count? I can import with 'Present' but I can't use it in a Recording Card.

One other thing I've noticed which may be related; I have setup a Rucksack with TaxonSearchCodes and use this in my Recording Card. This facility doesn't always work, irrespective of whether I am creating a new Sample or editing a previously saved Sample. When it does work it's great and very useful!

Totally understand the budget issues and fix priorities. As long as I know there are a couple of niggly bugs here I can work around them as necessary i.e. not have the Observations window maximised :)

Re: Unable to close Observations window

With regard to saving any data with 'Present' as an Abundance via a Recording Card what measurement unit are you using? Count and Range, the system supplied ones, have a data type of Number and if you use these when creating a recording card the data you enter in the resulting column is checked to ensure it is of the specified type. The import wizard doesn’t do this check although it probably should. If you set up a new unit with a data type of Text and use that when you create your recording card you will be able to put any text in the resulting column. However, an observation with no measurements implies presence so it isn’t really necessary to input 'Present'. Measurement data of 0 (zero) means absence.

Apologies for the delay. I overlooked this point. I have logged the other issues for fixing.

Re: Unable to close Observations window

Hi Sally,

Thanks for this, the penultimate sentence makes good sense (no measurement implies presence) , I'll implement that!
