Re: SQL Server Install problems

I'm currently trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express onto a Windows 7 Professional machine.  We were using 2005 but have decided to upgrade.  The problem is that during installation i get Error Code 2908.  Same goes for trying to reinstall the 2005 version.  I think it's a registry problem but I'm not sure.  Can anyone help?

Re: SQL Server Install problems

Microsoft discontinued use of the Installer Cleanup Utility due to errors on some machines so I can't follow through on that one.

Re: SQL Server Install problems

The uninstaller recommended by John in connection with another problem http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=1710 seems to be very good and may be an option. I have used it with SQL Server instances and haven't noticed any problems (so far) .

Re: SQL Server Install problems

Have tried both steps to no avail.  Still getting the same problems.  Have even tried manually cleaning the registry but still no effect.  The following errors come up during install:

Unable to register component (error code 2908)
{639A2CDE-823F-40C8-9989-DD63286C38A6}

Unable to register component (error code 2908)

Unable to register component (error code 2908)
{4CC7BE4F-04E1-4302-95CD-C0C29B6598B9}

These look like some sort of registry entry, but they don't exist when i look at the registry.

Re: SQL Server Install problems

Hi Steve
There does not seem to be much help on the web about this, at least not for Windows 7. One thought, have you tried checking the Windows Event Logs? It might be worth checking the application event log, or possibly the system event log to see if any services are failing during startup.

Re: SQL Server Install problems

Event log doesn't show much more beyond what's already displayed.  Beginning to look like a complete reinstall of windows at this point.

Re: SQL Server Install problems

Maybe it is worth posting on a specialised SQL Server forum, e.g. http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/ before going to a full re-install?

Re: SQL Server Install problems

If you look in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG
you will find the log files. They are quite verbose, but definitely not easy to digest. I think there istill switches to Setup to get even more information, although I am uncertain whether this applies to the install of SSMS Express. Books Online have information about switches for
unattended install.

Re: SQL Server Install problems

Thanks for all your help.  We ended up going for a full reinstall in the end due to other problems  with Windows.  SQL Server and Recorder 6 are now operational :)
