Re: Import - Taxa Missing

I'm just wondering am I right that if a taxon doesn't exist in R6 it is impossible to import any of the data for the current import?

It seems a little drastic to have to go back to the import file, having made a manual note of all the species R6 does not know, trawl though it and either not export or find every occurrence and remove it.

I dare not use the 'show rows containing this data' it may allow me to do other things but since every other button moving to another screen that I've tried forces a reboot I have no intention of going there.

Yes 4 weeks in and still failed to import a single record. [still not found anyone to admit here that they have imported anything]

Interestingly MapMate import will tell you and let you note [copy/paste] what fails although just rejects records without telling you what failed. I have to keep imports open on R6 and go through each entry finding possible solutions for the next import attempt. Rather tedious.

Tony, I don't understand why you are having so many problems, I mean apart from some of the bugs which we have mostly overcome now, we have been importing data continuously for months. What are these taxa that R6 doesn't recognise? We have found very few which weren't in the dictionary in some form. I thought the import wizard coped pretty well with taxonomic issues.

Re: Import - Taxa Missing

Well a few are.....

Anagallis arvensis subsp. arvensis f. azurea
Anemanthele lessoniana - this i could understand being from NZ.
Arrhenatherum elatius var. bulbosum
Cardemine pratensis flore pleno - ok a cultivar but in the wild now for some time.
Catabrosa aquatica subsp. aquatica
Centaurium erythraea var. erythraea
and so on

Many of the others relate to the fact that there people recording .agg and sens. lat. but they do not exist in the dictionaries. If they do they might appear in something called 'List of additional names' which seems to me to be a fudge with no reason. If someone has to centrally enter it to make it available why is it not in a 'proper' list. The up-shot of that list is I should really be allowed to enter anything I like myself. There are double entries in there with x .agg and x aggregate.

One interesting species I came across, I think in a preferred was x .agg sens. lat. which doesn't seem to make senso to meo.

I guess much of this may relate to an earlier revelation that many synonyms are missing.

It will take me a day or so to go through this one list of which I'm sure I will not find a match for many. At which point I will have to cancel the import and find and remove those not matched. I like you am just trying to make a record of what the observer said they saw.

I'm still coding up an app. to re-format all the names using regular expressions. I've identified some consistent forms and hope that next week I may be able to get the import wizard to recognise the names.

Re: Import - Taxa Missing

Hi Tony
First you can add your own taxa. Search help for "Edit Taxa overview" - there is an item titled "Edit taxon details overview". Records tagged to these entries added by you can be imported but not exported.

The names added by the NHM are added temporarily to the list of additional names in an attempt to get them out quicker. The idea is that they are then forwarded to the list maintainer of the preferred list for them to integrate at a later date (and hence become available in one of teh preferred lists). However, some may be reluctant to accept the additional names or may not want to update the main list that quickly - so list of preferred names was introduced to get around this.

Best wishes
Steve

Re: Import - Taxa Missing

Thanks Steve, strangely I had seen the Taxon details dialogue but as my Add/Edit buttons were not visible I had moved on quickly. Oops.

It would seem that many species could stay on this list for a long time.
