Re: Linking a new client to the server

We are running a network version of Recorder 6.14, using MSDE.  There are two client machines successfully connected to this server.

We would like to connect another client machine to the server.  This machine already has a network copy of Recorder installed - 6.7.2.  In the past this was intended to be a training copy of Recorder and was not connected to the server.  The database has the same site ID and is empty.

How do we connect this new client to the server?  Could there be any danger of the empty database overwriting the live database on the server?  And when connected, will the database on the new client machine automatically upgrade to the version on the server?

I hope this makes sense, any advice would be greatly appreciated as always.

Thanks

Francesca

Re: Linking a new client to the server

We think we have managed to point the client to the server, but on opening Recorder on the client we are getting an error message:
EOleException - Could not find stored procedure - 'usp_DefaultUser_Get_Key'.
A previous post indicated this might be due to a permissions problem but no solution was posted.

Re: Linking a new client to the server

Does this mean that you are in effect attempting to connect a 6.7 installation to a 6.14 database? This would probably cause some sort of error, someone else may be able to confirm if it is the one you have. Probably best to uninstall 6.7 and do a new install of 6.14 on the client.

Re: Linking a new client to the server

That does sound like the sort of error you will get from a mismatch between the application and database versions. When you say "point the client to the server" what did you actually do? The main things you need to do are:
1) Change the shortcut to Recorder to point to the application on the 6.14 network server.
2) change the registry setting for the database server to match the other clients, at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Dorset Software\Recorder 6 under the setting Server Name.
3) In the same location in the registry, you should change the Installation Path to match.
4) In the registry, under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Dorset Software\Recorder 6\Settings, change the value of Object Sheet File Path to point to the same server. There are other paths you should also change in this section though I don't think they are quite so essential, but probably best to check them all.

Let us know if this does not make sense.
