Re: Recorder backup problem

I have tried to back up the database using the Database Tools - Backup Database function and have received the following message - does anyone know what it means, and if I can back up the database another way?

Re: Recorder backup problem

Hi Fran,

If I remember rightly you are still on MSDE and waiting to move onto SQL Server? When we were in that situation we were able to use SQL Server Management Studio Express to make backups so that might be worth a try if it is already installed on your network. It is a free download from the Microsoft website.

However, it sounds as if your backup volume could be corrupt, in which case you will need to sort that out first. I can't remember how to do that in MSDE, can someone else advise?

Re: Recorder backup problem

I agree, it sounds like your existing backup file is broken. If you know where it is, then you could try renaming the backup file and trying again, so Recorder creates one from fresh.

Hi John

I've renamed the file and tried again but get this message - I don't think this is good news!

Re: Recorder backup problem

Did the original backup file re-appear after trying that? If not I wonder if it is a permissions problem in which case you could try moving the backup directory in Recorder. Otherwise I'm not sure what could be wrong, and maybe Janet's suggestion of trying SQL Server Management Studio Express to make backups is the best bet.

Re: Recorder backup problem

No the original backup file didn't reappear.  I'll try moving the backup directory.

I installed SSMSE on my client machine but was unable to login to the server.  I have admin rights to the server and have tried those.  I am going to seek help from our IT department, but before I do this, is there a way of bypassing this login page or finding out the username used to login to the server? (which would give me an idea of the password.)  We don't login to the actual server machine very often, hence my uncertainty.  Thanks.

Re: Recorder backup problem

Moving the backup directory didn't work either!

I have now logged onto the actual server machine but a series of messages have popped up relating to insufficient space on the hard drive.  On checking the C: properties we have only 560KB left!  Could this be the cause of the backup problems?  Our database is at 1.79GB, which is why we are taking the backup, as we need to upgrade to SQL Server to allow us to expand.

Re: Recorder backup problem

We have cleared some space on the server and have successfully backed up Recorder.  Thanks for the advice.
