Re: OS Data now available for free

This is big news. Ordnance Survey today made a sizeable chunk of its data catalogue available for free from its website:

Some analysis from The Guardian, who were one of the principle champions in getting the data freed:

Re: OS Data now available for free

Great news indeed. The first link though took me to a login prompt, but I had slightly better luck at http://opendata.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/. Unfortunately all the links from this page seem to just go a page saying they are experience high volumes at the moment! Feels a bit like opening a present on Christmas day to find it is broke!

Reading between the lines of the Guardian report, it looks like will be able to download tiles down to 1:10,000 resolution, and I would be surprised if we can't load them into Recorder. If so it would make sense to add a tutorial on the Wiki. In your other post Charles you mention that the 1:50K and 1:25K tiles are not being released - where did you get this information? I think the restriction is on the raw data that would be required to reproduce your own version of the map. Looking forward to seeing the new data when it is finally working!
