Topic: Chytridomycota: Olpidium radicale

Hi Chris
I'm struggling with obscure fungi again.

Olpidium radicale (Olpidium radicale Schwartz & Ivimey Cook, Trans. Br. mycol. Soc. 13(3-4): 216 (1928)) which is now a synonym of Leiolpidium radicale (Schwartz & Ivimey Cook) Doweld, Index Fungorum 126: 1 (2014).

I have two records from 2024 on two separate hosts (Cochlearia danica and Tripleurospermum maritimum).

I am unable to trace a UK reference. Is this another one to be referred to Kew?

Thanks

Christine

Re: Chytridomycota: Olpidium radicale

The two recognised British Olpidiums are O. radicale and O. brassicae although both may end up being complexes. Doweld transferring them to Olpidiaster and Leiolpidium is not fully accepted as it was not backed up by molecular evidence. Both are still Olpidiums in the handbook of microfungal parasites (https://www.aber.ac.uk/waxcap/downloads … _Aug24.pdf). However Olpidium radicale is missing from the UKSI. I have added it to the BMS list and will forward it to the UKSI shortly. A second however is that neither of your host species is listed in the handbook. As Arthur Chater is probably the expert in this group, I will contact him about these host species.

And there is Olpidium agrostidis as well but that will not be involved here.

Arthur says that they have a number of records of O. radicale on Cochlearia and Tripleurospermum maritimum so radicale it is and it will soon be on the UKSI.

Thank you, this is excellent news.
I've archived the records and I'll add them to our Fungi dataset when they are added to the NBN species list.
