Photography is a highly popular means of recording.

Morris RKA, 2020. Take nothing but photographs ... time for a reality check? British Wildlife 32, 118–124.

Recorder 6 needs an image module. Probably in the form of a drag and drop routine and a thumbnail creator.
The technology is all out there. iMatch can geotag via a mapping function and there are other geotaggers. Once geotagged you have 3 of the basic 4 "w"s. It's all in the EXIF metadata
The drag and drop technology can be found in iSpot, Flickr and iNaturalist
Lat/Long converters are to be found in the OS Batch convert tool at https://gridreferencefinder.com/batchCo … onvert.php so it's not hard to get OSGB from Lat/Long formats
All that's needed after the drag and drop is a taxon name.
To ensure the highest level of popularity it would have to extend beyond the UK

I was chatting with Jo Judge and some LERC folks the other day and the topic of Recorder 6 exporting to Darwin Core format came up.

I think this is something Mike Weideli has looked at previously, but I couldn't remember where that got to. Would this be a suitable feature request to feature on the Trello board? It's possibly an idea that we could promote for 'sponsorship', as there are various organisations with a particular interest in facilitating data exchange from Recorder 6 to the NBN Atlas.

(Apologies if this has been addressed previously, and I missed it.)

Can the length of the description field in the MEASUREMENT_TYPE table be increased? VARCHAR(50) is too short to write a useful description. TEXT seems overkill, but is in-line with other descriptions.

Limiting the ui text box to the same length would also be helpful so as not to truncate text entered (which is how I found out about the low length!).

There has long been a problem with the addition of related documents to Recorder occurrence records:

1) If a record is added via the single entry form in Recorder, the Source Document is attached to the SAMPLE
2) If a record is imported via a spreadsheet or text file, the Source Document is attached to the TAXON_OCCURRENCE
3) I don't know where the Recording Forms put their data relating to literary references

In Recorder there appears to be no link between the Document stored in the Sample and the child Taxon Occurrences hence to find all the records attached to a document, it is necessary to run two searches one against the Sample and one against Taxon Occurrence

Would it be possible to either
1) build a link so if a document is linked to the Sample, then all child occurrences refer to it automatically; or
2) make the import and direct entry behave in the same manner, so both put the literary reference in the same table (obviously for historical data there will need to be a batch file to move all the references to the same table)

Craig

As it stands you can have a recorder and a determiner. It would be really useful to be able to add a verifier as a separate third entity as it is a distinct role.
I don't expect this to be added to the existing data mode, but it would be good if it could be included in any future development.

Review Comments and two more requests

I have just carried out my first import with the new 'Reviewer' determination system (so two determinations can be added at once).

However, I could not seem to find a way to import the 'Review Comment' or 'Reviewer Comment'. It is possible to import 'Taxon Determination Comment' which goes with the first determination. Please can this field be added to the Import Wizard?

Also, I had two more ideas that came from this import -

1) it would be good to be able to import into a specific field for image (photo) references, so image urls can be put in there.

2) Once the External Keys are imported they are not visible in the main Recorder 6 interface, would it be possible to have these visible somewhere when looking at a taxon occurrence?

Thanks,

Phil

I have recently seen the panic on a user's face when they start Recorder following a dictionary update and can't find any taxon occurrence records in their surveys. Luckily the problem was just down to the fact that their IT organisation had applied the dictionary update but hadn't rebuilt the indexes. Would it be possible (simple) to check if any of the 4 indexes are empty when Recorder starts - to avoid a similar panic and remind them the indexes need rebuilding?
