Re: Help! Our Recorder is broken

We cannot create any new taxon occurences in Recorder 6. Two volunteers were entering data and suddenly both got error messges. We can still run reports and use the rest of the programme. We can add new events and samples but not taxon occurences.

This could be because you have reached the size limit of the  version of SQL Server you are running.  Which version do you have ?

How big is your database, NBNData_Data.MDF? See http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=9737#p9737 for information on database sizes. As well as those quoted, it is worth noting that the maximum size of a SQL Server 2008 Express database is 10 GB. Can you move to full SQL Server or SQL Server 2008 Express if you have hit the limit for your version of SQL Server? Despite what it says in http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=9557#p9557 SQL Server 2008 Express is currently being tested for use with Recorder 6 v6.17 and, as far as I know, there are no problems associated with running Recorder 6 with it.

Thank you very much both, you immediately got us to the nub of the problem we have reached the 2Gb size limit. Do you have any thoughts about whether we are ok to use SQL Server 2008 Express or whether we'll need to pay for full SQL server?

We'll have to do some more digging internally as I think Recorder is not the only database on that server.

I suggest you move to SQL Server 2008 Express. You will need to install the Management tools in order to detach the database from the SQL Server 2005 instance and attach it to the  SQL server 2008 instance.

SQL Server 2008 with tools is available at  http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=22973. 

If you need further help in transfering the database please ask.

Hi,

I will be undertaking the task of migrating the database from MSDE 2000 to SQL Server 2008 Express.

Apart from dettaching and re-attaching the database are there any other necessary steps required?  Is there any documentation I could take a look at?

I appreciate your help.

The Network installtion Guide contains the required  information under MIGRATING FROM MSDE - SQL SERVER (page 10 in my manual). This also applies to the move to SQl Server 2008. Apart from detaching and attaching the database to the new instance you will need to 

1. Ensure that there is a NBNuser Llogin on the SQL Server
2.Enable NBNUser. This is done by running the following query under NBNData

EXEC sp_change_users_login  'Update_One', 'NBNUser','NBNUser'

3. Change the server name in the registry to the new instance (HKey Local machine\Software\Dorset Software\Recorder 6)
