Topic: Designation updates

Can I ask if anyone knows if/when the in-built taxon designations are updated in R6? There is Scottish legislation from 2021 that added Mountain Hare to Sch 5 of the W&CA, but from what I can see this has never come through on the R6 designations via the dictionary updates in recent years, unless I have missed something.

Also there is a recent refresh of the Scottish Biodiversity List.

It would be useful to understand what the timetable for such updates are (if there is one), so I know if I need to do some work arounds in the mean time.

Re: Designation updates

Hi Mark

The designations are all maintained by the JNCC - Graham French has traditionally handled them in the past and the last update was in 2024. I could enquire but it might be best if you get in touch because it always elevates priorities when the end-users request it :)

Best wishes,
Chris R.

As a follow-up, Graham has been in touch and is planning an update :)

Re: Designation updates

Thanks Chris, that's good to know.

We were chatting earlier at a catch-up meeting with other Scottish LERCs about the need to make sure the designations are updated. None of us were totally certain what the process was, but we all agreed it's an important part of Recorder 6 for LERCs. Without these updates we all have to manage individual work-arounds.

Thanks again for your help,

Mark

Hi Chris. Do you have an update on when this might happen? I've just spotted that JNCC published a bulk update to the Conservation Designations spreadsheet at the beginning of June which formally (and belatedly) adopt a number of updated Red Lists which have been published in recent years including Butterflies (2022) and Vascular Plants (2025). https://jncc.gov.uk/our-work/red-lists- … t-britain/

The one thing that annoys our local groups more than anything else is when we try to explain that the statuses we show in reports are taken from whatever is currently included in Recorder. We try to explain the way in which the process work and the inherent lag from publication to everything getting updated in Recorder but for them, once BC or BSBI have published their review, that is the new status.

Thanks
