Topic: Recorder 6 mapping problems - new workstation issues

An 'uninitiated' new user on our networked instance of R6 (6.30.0.291) has attempted to set up mapping on their workstation and as a consequence, the mapping on my workstation now doesn't work! I'm unable to change the file path of the base map to give me access despite having 'system manager' access rights.

The enclosed screenshot shows the mapping admin tab in 'Map options'. Does this give any clues (ignore mark-ups unless relevant)?

Please does anyone have a simple explanation of what to do to redress this as its driving me to distraction?

Many thanks.

Re: Recorder 6 mapping problems - new workstation issues

Hi Paul,

All sorts of things can do wrong with R6 mapping and having used R6 for a lengthy time now the maps are probably the thing that fails most.

The most 'stable' networked use i work with is ensuring each user has their own basemap set up ('Enabled Maps'), and only that map in use (green tick) for that user. This tends to avoid conflicts with polygon imports/searches.

Do you have a lot on the map to lose? It might be that if you were to 'Reset' (using yes, NOT all) your map it would bring it back into your control however, i imagine there is a risk that it'll just clear anything you've stored on there (though polygons were retained when i tested it on a simple basemap just now).

Re: Recorder 6 mapping problems - new workstation issues

Thanks for the reply. No, not a lot to lose but it does man that we can't use the maps to create outputs in its current state. I could try your suggestion, which I've shied away from due to a lack of knowledge, but Recorder now won't boot and gives me the enclosed bug report. Does this mean a re-install, with all the problems and delays that this brings with our IT section?

Thanks again.

Re: Recorder 6 mapping problems - new workstation issues

Hi Paul, you shouldn't need to reinstall. Are you able to access your computer registry (regedit)?

Just looking back at your original post, the Object Sheet seems to be on a local (C) drive? Normally the location should be on a shared location for a networked installation which all R6 users can access, i've added a screenshot of my map settings (corpdata is a network drive).

Mike has previously provided details on fixing Object Sheet file path issues, maybe check this thread: https://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=6429

Searching "Object sheet file path" in the forum brings up a fair few, the actual issue may depend on your network installation. Avoid resetting for now and check that the shared folder for the Object Sheet exists at where the registry is pointing, for all users, and that everyone has write access to that folder.

Out of interest when a new user has installed R6 did they install using the full Recorder 6 exe or the workstation exe?

It might be worth getting in touch with Mike and the team direct for this one as the issue could depend on how R6 has been installed across the network and i'd not want to cock things up further for you!

Re: Recorder 6 mapping problems - new workstation issues

Hi Ben,

Thanks for taking the time to respond further. Yes, I was a bit surprised by the object sheet location myself. I don't have access to 'regedit' as its locked to all but our IT bods.

It's frustrating that I can't check anything at the moment as Recorder crashes instantly, giving the bug report enclosed with my previous post! I've asked both other new installs whether Recorder is opening OK for them and it is, so the problem appears to be with my machine. I'm afraid I don't know whether IT installed using Recorder 6 exe or the workstation exe. I'll follow your advice and trawl the forum for useful info. Already emailed Mike so awaiting his advice.

Sorry I couldn't be of help, sounds like your hands are somewhat tied by IT.

Do the other installations also have C drive Object Sheets? Starting to sound like this might be the conflict.

Re: Recorder 6 mapping problems - new workstation issues

Hi

Something has messed up the regsitry. Without access to it it is a bit difficult to sort out. From www.Recorder6.info in Documents download Management of R6 Mapping System. Unfortunately, you may ned to involve IT to change the path to the oject sheet folder. You could look on one of the machine that is working and see where the obkect sheet folder is for them. You can do this through Map/Map Options/ Admin . As you see from the extract below the object sheet folder must be set the same for everyone in each workstaion  registry.

Network – Location of Object Sheet folder
On network system the path to the object sheet folder must be the same on all workstations.  This may not be the case if varying versions of R6 have been used to install workstations or if manual changes have been made to the registry.  Varying paths to object sheet folders cause major problems with mapping by corrupting the database and files.
When either the Map View or Map Options is selected, Recorder 6 will check to see if the workstations have the same object sheet as the ‘Master’.  The ‘Master’ workstation defaults to the last workstation which did a full reset, but users can also set the ‘Master’ workstation through the Option menu (Settings). The Object_Sheet_Folder column in the Map_Sheet table is populated by the registry entry when the workstation is opened.  Opening Map View and Opening Map Option will both perform the check. The object sheet on a workstation can be brought into line with the Master using the Fix’ button in Map Options/Admin.   User should ensure that mapping works on the ‘Master’ workstation, before it is used to update others.   If this option does not rectify the situation or if this does not work, then steps must be taken to change the registry on the workstation. Until the path on the workstation is corrected then the mapping cannot be used on the workstation.  The internal setup of some systems may mean that the registry entries for the maps are contained in user profiles. If this is the case then the profiles need to be adjusted.
If the workstation or the user does not have read/ write access on the required folders then this may cause an error. In this situation steps need to be taken to correct the permissions issues.
