Topic: Tetanops

Query here on a species of Diptera which has cropped up in some historic data we are in the process of digitising.

Tetanops myopina has been recorded but the name does not exist in the available UK taxonomy. However, it does exist elsewhere in the world and GBIF and Diptera.org (http://www.diptera.org/NomenclatorDetai … cn=480507#)  have it as a valid name. We do have listed Tetanops myopinus which i strongly suspect is a synonym of T. myopina.. as T. myopinus does not exist on the GBIF taxonomy or elsewhere (other than in the UK).

The Welsh Invertebrate Database appears to have put records of T. myopinus on the NBN and then the same records as T. myopina on GBIF (i'm assuming their uploading separate to the NBN as none of the other UK T. myopinus records have been converted).

So is T. myopina, T. myopinus. Does the taxonomy need amending or is everyone else wrong?

Re: Tetanops

I think I'd agree with your logic - myopina has to be the same thing as myopinus - they're just different genders. Tetanops myopinus appears on the Chandler checklist of Diptera though so, unless he changes his name, I think I will just add myopina as a junior synonym for now.
