Ooer - you can see how much I use the Help - when I try I get "Navigation to the webpage was canceled" on every page!

This is covered under known issues on the Recorder site. http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-4981. The solution given requires registry changes, but you can normally just copy the file to a local drive and access directly from there outside Recorder. To get recorder to look locally requires a registry change in HKey_Current_User/Dorset software/Recorder 6/Settings. The path for the help file needs to be changed. 

To save you looking in help the answer to your original query as far as Locations is concerned is to highlight the Locations you wish to export (top level will do). Then start the Export. At the first window where you choose the type of file untick the include observations and this will just export the Locations. Similar thing applies to Names.

I have not personally ever tried this, but assume that it works as documented.

I'd managed to view the help files and had a go at exporting Locations - this failed and has been logged on the Problems thread

I can't see a way of exporting all the contacts, I can only do it one at a time, although that did work fine, as did exporting just one site!
