Re: Arvicola terrestris is now Arvicola amphibius

The following Wikipedia article offers a good explanation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Water_Vole

Can this be updated in the dictionary as soon as possible please? It's one of the 'flagship' species around here and comes, not unexpectedly, under and increased amount of scrutiny.

Cheers,
Charles

Re: Arvicola terrestris is now Arvicola amphibius

Dear Charles,

We can certainly add Arvicola amphibius if that is what you want to record against (although I should have thought that it ought to be amphiba). I see that Catalogue of Life still use A. terrestris in their 2009 checklist and Fauna Europaea use Arvicola terrestris amphibius (Linnaeus, 1758). I am therefore checking with our Mammal Section (who maintain the 'Recommended' Checklist for Mammals in the Dictionary) what the currently recognised name actually is.

Re: Arvicola terrestris is now Arvicola amphibius

The Mammal Section have pronounced - Arvicola amphibius (Linnaeus, 1758) is the name name to use. So I have amended The Dictionary (Might take a little while to filter through to Recorder).
The Taxon Version Key is NHMSYS0020546253
